Description

The City of Chicago Law Department is seeking an attorney for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor to direct attorneys in the Legal Information and Prosecutions ("LIP") Division representing the City in Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) matters, document production, electronic discovery (e-discovery), and Local Records Act (LRA) matters.

The Assistant Corporation Counsel (ACC) Supervisor will work under the direct supervision of the Chief Assistant Corporation Counsel in the Legal Information group and under the general supervision of the City Prosecutor. The ACC Supervisor will work closely with various City Departments and officials, including the Mayor's Office and the Chicago Police Department, regarding document identification and production in response to high profile FOIA requests. The ACC Supervisor will have supervisory responsibility over various matters, including but not limited to client counseling and training on FOIA, record retention, record preservation and production issues, Public Access Counselor (PAC) appeal letters, and litigation in state and federal court. The ACC Supervisor will handle all phases of litigation on his/her own cases, including preparing pleadings and motions of varying complexity, appearing in court for case management conferences, conducting settlement conferences and motion hearings, compiling discovery, and drafting and arguing motions for summary judgment. This work involves voluminous document reviews, awareness briefings, and redaction projects. The ACC Supervisor has supervisory responsibility over Assistant Corporation Counsel and all phases of their assigned cases, trainings, and projects.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ideal candidates will posses:



  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in state and/or federal court;
  • Superior writing, research, and editing skills;
  • Excellent logic skills and the ability to think, act, and prioritize quickly;
  • Strong litigation skills, including substantial trial experience;
  • Exceptional client counseling and organizational skills;
  • Superior communication skills (written/verbal);
  • Demonstrated use of sound judgment;
  • The ability to work well with others;
  • The ability to communicate well with others including groups and high-level officials;
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and initiative on assigned tasks; and
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, monitor, and control workflow deadlines.


Preference may be given to candidates possessing the following:



  • Five (5) years of experience handling matters involving governmental agencies.
  • Experience litigating on behalf of Government agencies in state court;
  • Experience responding to FOIA requests and/or handling FOIA matters before the Public Access Counselor.
  • Experience with client counseling and training on FOIA, record retention, record preservation, and production issues.
  • Experience with document review and large document production matters.
  • Experience providing client counseling, including to high level officials.
  • Experience working with short deadlines.
  • Experience working with the media.
  • Experience supervising staff attorneys

Qualifications

Qualifications

Graduation from an American Bar Association accredited law school and admission to the Illinois Bar (or eligible for admission on motion to the Illinois Bar pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court Rule 705) good standing with your state Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission.
