The Office of Community Engagement & External Affairs is dedicated to fostering strong relationships between the hospital and the communities it serves. Rooted in BMC's commitment to excellent and equitable care for all, the Office of Community Engagement & External Affairs works to bridge the gap between healthcare services and community needs, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their background, have access to high-quality care and support by developing programming, events, and initiatives. This department is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with faith leaders, corporate partners, and community-based organizations, as well as with federal, state, and local government.

The Senior Manager of Community Engagement & External Affairs will work directly in partnership with community organizations and leaders around Massachusetts to ensure the attainment of community engagement goals and the BMCHS mission. The Senior Manager must have strong existing relationships in the Greater Boston community and be a trusted resource to community leadership as well as to BMCHS faculty and staff.

This role will be responsible for leading and executing the Community Engagement strategic plan in support of the BMCHS mission and revenue goals, managing key national and local partnerships and engagement activities to ensure the successful interfacing with community, corporate, entertainment, and government leaders. The role is critical in rebuilding community relationships in both the Brockton and Brighton markets with patients and stakeholders in the Good Samaritan and St. Elizabeth's catchment area, where the Sr. Manager will actively engage and partner with the community and be an active, visible, and trusted collaborator. The Sr. Manager will build two-way dialogues and a community informed approach to patient care, serving as a new brand ambassador to help return volume to these facilities, as well as support the overall BMCHS health system. Additionally, the role will serve as a sensitive partner as spiritual care practices are rolled out and established across these hospitals as their brands transition. This role requires excellent communication and organizational skills to foster positive relationships and ensure the successful execution of community engagement initiatives and events.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Collaborate with Hospital and Community Stakeholders:


  • Work closely with clinicians, department heads, and community leaders to understand their partnership needs and requirements for achieving organizational goals and objectives.
  • Act as a liaison between community partners and hospital teams, ensuring clear communication of organizational capabilities, priority changes, and troubleshooting challenging situations.
  • Gather and evaluate feedback to continuously improve partnerships and enhance engagement.
  • Rebuild community relationships that have been neglected or not nurtured over time for Good Samaritan and St Elizabeth's under Steward's leadership.
  • Work in partnership with team's other Sr. Manager and Project Manager to deliver against system-wide goals and initiatives, particularly the new hospitals.

Roll Out Rebrand and Serve as Key Brand Ambassador


  • Serve as frontline member of the broader Marketing team to support hospital rebrand efforts and securing visibility in these communities to return hospital volume.
  • Promote and establish the brand value proposition and key service line areas in community settings, through custom events and conversations.
  • Partner with hospital operations to understand key areas of focus and also to deliver community input and feedback.
  • Respectively support new ways of delivering spiritual care in the hospitals and sharing opportunities to worship with the surrounding communities.

Community Partnership: Collaborate with local organizations, faith-based groups, advocacy organizations, and government agencies to build and sustain partnerships that uplift and impact communities by way of sponsorships, tabling at or hosting events, letters of support, and more. The goal of this community partnership is to create sustainable impact, build feedback loops, inform system initiatives. This also includes restoring trust and driving volume for Good Samaritan and St Elizabeth's.

Programmatic Support: Support initiatives that aim to improve health outcomes, which may include programs tailored to meet the specific needs of various demographic groups and individuals with chronic health conditions in these communities.

Strategic Alignment: With oversight and direction from the Vice President of Community Engagement and External Affairs and Chief Marketing & Growth Officer, will help to inform and be responsible for the execution of the department and Marketing's strategic plan, ensuring alignment with system leadership.

Engagement Activities:


  • National: Organize, host, and participate in local, state, and national events to elevate the work BMCHS at a national level. This requires someone skilled in guiding the project manager in organizing large-scale events and interfacing with government, corporate, and entertainment leaders. Key initiatives include reinforcing BMCHS though leadership at annual Martha's Vineyard events and other national speaking engagements for Vice President.

  • Local: Manage participation in community events, health fairs, educational workshops, and outreach programs designed to educate and empower community members.

    • Responsible for working with project manager and liaising with external event organizers, organizing BMC's presence, and ultimately the successful execution of these activities.
    • Work with Marketing & Communications to ensure messaging and talking points are in alignment with key system priorities and also lean toward driving goals that align with these key audiences locally, converting them to patients and supporters.
    • Partners internally with various BMCHS divisions (e.g. hospitals, Wellsense, Clearway) and departments to align and execute on community engagement efforts.
    • Align with the Office of Development where appropriate, making strategic connections around support areas of interest to drive revenue goals.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree required

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • None

EXPERIENCE:

  • At least 7 years previous work experience in communications, marketing, community engagement, or community health required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs):


  • Background in community engagement with strong knowledge of the health care landscape and/or other community organizations, state agencies, and programs
  • Knowledge of the social, political, and economic dynamics of Boston, and specifically those of Greater Brockton and South Shore region and/or Allston-Brighton, is preferred
  • Must be a problem-solver
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and work collaboratively across agencies and teams
  • Ability to work with BMCHS teams to coordinate community engagement meetings, activities, and sponsorships
  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written), second language preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, relationship-building, and organizational skills
  • Strong knowledge of software applications such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word and project management tools such as AirTable
  • Must be able to establish a high level of trust and build productive relationships and partnerships
  • Ability to work across different groups of people and environments to build relationships
  • Ability to further establish and maintain long-term relationships and partnerships
  • Ability to organize and facilitate community events
  • Ability to refer BMCHS community members and patients to resources and agencies
  • Must have transportation to travel to sites across Greater Boston
