SWCA's expanding Architectural History Group is seeking an experienced On Call Project Architectural Historian to support our California team, working with current staff in our five offices statewide. A Project Architectural Historian is a core member of the region-wide Cultural Resources program and will collaborate with SWCA's project managers, and leadership on technical and business development efforts throughout California. This is an On Call position located in either our Pasadena or San Diego office. Successful applicants will have no fewer than 7 years of experience in historic preservation, historic resource analysis, and environmental consulting.

What you will accomplish

  • Independently manage project teams, from start to finish, as PM and technical lead
  • Serve as lead architectural historian for historic resource assessments/evaluations according to local, state, and federal criteria of significance
  • Plan and conduct site visits in locations throughout California
  • Independently manage multidisciplinary project teams, project budgets, schedule, and client communication
  • Complete archival research, focusing on primary and secondary sources and utilizing online and local resources.
  • Research and write historic context statements, which identify significant context, themes, and property types
  • Lead efforts to prepare defensible environmental compliance documentation in support of CEQA/NHPA/Section 106 review
  • Plan and carry out historic resource surveys of a variety of residential, commercial, and institutional properties using Arc-GIS-enabled tablet computers and other cutting-edge survey methodology
  • Effectively lead efforts to document survey results in reports and record historic resources on California DPR 523 forms
  • Independently prepare landmark designations and Mills Act applications
  • Carry out project-level review for compliance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards, in support of CEQA and local permitting projects
  • Assist local governments with creating and revising planning regulations, including historic preservation ordinances
  • Meet schedules, budgets, and project key performance indicators
  • Assign and communicate technical needs and project tasks to project team members
  • Design field approach/plan and leads project staff in overall project completion
  • Oversee/perform QA/QC, organization, and tracking to ensure project requirements are met
  • Manage quality and completeness of data collection, analysis, and report completion from start to finish
  • Perform mid-level technical peer review of documents
  • Adeptly interface with clients and agencies related to specific tasks to ensure needs and objectives are met
  • Mentor and coach junior-level staff

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience conducting research, writing, and consulting in American architectural history with a consulting firm, agency, or other professional organization; preferred experience includes working on a variety of project types and sizes, on all project aspects (from pre-field tasks through final report preparation), in multiple regions, and with a variety of regulatory agencies
  • A solid understanding of federal and state cultural resource and historic preservation laws and best practices, including NEPA, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and CEQA
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the history/architectural history of Southern California/California
  • Experience recording and evaluating architectural resources on California DPR 523 forms
  • Primary report authorship in a CRM context and experience providing quality control review of field documents, site forms and reports
  • Experience with application of The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation (36 CFR Part 67) and Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record documentation and procedures
  • Ability to independently lead a multidisciplinary team and proactively track budget, schedule, and deliverables
