Job Summary

The UCSF Hematology-Oncology Division at Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) Hospital is dedicated to excellence in learning, teaching, research and providing comprehensive, compassionate care to all patients with cancer and blood disorders. The division's activities include providing specialty care to patients in the following outpatient specialty care clinics - Hematology, Oncology and Sickle-cell. Under direction of medical personnel, the Hospital Assistant performs intake and post examination duties. The essential job functions include the following: Panel management (working with an interdisciplinary team in patient appointment reminder calls, missed appointment follow up and gathering patient health maintenance data), performs vital signs on all patients, performs EKG, assists with patient flow during clinic hours, shows patients to exam rooms, maintains exam rooms on a daily basis and checks equipment to ensure proper functioning, performs phlebotomy procedures, injections, and maintains daily lab activity logs. Maintains and creates templates for new/current providers, adding additional clinics and blocking clinics when provider requests. Assists with patient transport to main ZSFG building as needed. Assists with filing, faxing and other clerical duties as assigned.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $32.86 - $41.01 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

Housed in the Department of Medicine, the Hematology-Oncology Division at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital is dedicated to excellence in learning, teaching, research and providing comprehensive, compassionate care to all patients with cancer and blood disorders. The division's activities include providing specialty care to patients in the clinic and on the inpatient medical wards, clinical and policy research on vulnerable populations, and clinical & multi-disciplinary teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows. The division is funded by several mechanisms including federal, state, city, private and industry and has an operating budget of over $8 million.

Required Qualifications


  • High School graduation and three years of appropriate experience, including one year of supervisory experience where applicable; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant program, which included training in giving injections
  • Excellent Phlebotomy skills
  • Must be exceptionally well organized and detail oriented. Able to set priorities and follow through on assigned tasks.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology appropriate to job responsibilities.
  • Basic mathematical / computational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a busy team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to push/pull 50lbs or greater while performing patient transport (wheelchair) to main hospital building.
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Prior experience in a busy medical setting.
  • Prior experience in a Patient Centered Medical Home clinic setting preferred.
  • At least one year of experience as a Medical Assistant.
  • Hematology and Oncology experience.
  • Bilingual (English plus Spanish, Mandarin, or Cantonese)
  • Familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel.

License/Certification


  • Certified in Phlebotomy (California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I).
  • Current CPR Certification
