Pay Range

$218,700 - $277,344 Annually for the SEL.4 level

$262,410 - $332,772 Annually for the SEL.5 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.


Job Description

We have an opening for an Embedded Weapon Systems Development (EWSD) Group Leader. The EWSD group provides enabling technology development to support surveillance, safety, surety, and certification of current and future nuclear and conventional weapon systems. You will manage employees to accomplish technical, programmatic, and administrative requirements; interacting with all levels of management and stakeholders to establish a wide range of projects, develop budgets, and manage execution. This position has programmatic and line responsibilities in the Strategic Defense (SD) Program and the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED).

This position may offer a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

This position will be filled at eitherlevel based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

  • Provide technical, safety, and security leadership to diverse group of personnel and activities; collaborate with project principal investigators and group personnel in defining programmaticobjectives.
  • Assign work and remain cognizant of the technical goals, solution approaches, and progress of all group projects
  • Responsible for hiring, staff/career development, staff coordination, and performance management activities for group personnel and to participate in the DTED ranking and salary processes. Monitor performance required to meet programmatic milestones and deliverables and lead corrective actions where necessary.
  • Develop long term initiatives and product development plans that provide solutionsfor SD programs. Implement approved initiatives by assigning appropriate staff and monitoring progress toward improvement goals.
  • Lead group to review drawings, software, schematics, studies, and technology reports to ensure group is following engineering rigor and that needs are being met for all stakeholders.
  • Support technology development for joint test assemblies, testing apparatuses, surety, demonstrators, system integration, weapon technology development, surveillance, issue resolution group, weapon response, and/or other SD program areas that ensure technology can progress from the development phase through production.
  • Perform and retain technical duties in developing mechanical, electrical or physics-based solutions for technology maturation supporting broad range SD activities.
  • Serve as subject matter expert in EWSD technical areas for the SD program at meetings, briefings,collaborations, design reviews, and committee activities both internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.5 level

  • Influence strategic technical decisions made by senior management and external customers.
  • Lead and develop advancements in cutting edge capabilities, technologies and programs that may have impact beyond the Laboratory.
  • Serve as organization spokesperson for Laboratory management and/or external advisor for sponsors and serve on external scientific or technical committees.

Qualifications
  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering or equivalent level of education and related experience.
  • Experience in analysis, design, testing, field deployment, assessments and project management while applying engineering discipline to the successful resolution of complex problems.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, managing, and coordinating technical teams and programmatic goals across organizational lines to meet system requirements with confined schedules and budgets.
  • Expert problem-solving, decision-making skills necessary to independently advise, counsel, recommend, and develop solutions on a wide variety of technical and programmatic issues.
  • Expertise in communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and external sponsors.
  • Expertise in given technical discipline applying rigor to product development and ability to coordinate with Subject Matter Experts in developing technologies for a variety of products and applications.
  • Ability to travel.

Additional qualifications at the SEL.5 level

  • Significant experience monitoring performance required to meet programmatic milestones and deliverables, advanced verbal skills to communicate to senior management, and to positively represent SD programs and the Laboratory.
  • Advanced technical leadership and project management skills in a high-technology research and development environment collaborating with NNSA, DOE, DHS, DOD, and/or other government agencies.
  • Significant experience in personnel management, including supervision, performance management, and career development.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master's degree or PhD in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent level of education and related experience.
  • Experience in nuclear weapon system design, requirements, and materials.
  • Experience in system engineering applied to technology development from low level product maturation to mass production of components producing high reliability designs that meet all requirements of the stakeholders.
