Job Summary

Please note: The position will start at 55% 2/28/2025 to 7/31/2025; The position will reduce to 20% from 8/1/2025-2/28/2026. The position will be funded 20% by Malcolm John through his BHI grant 2/28/2025 to 2/28/2026.
35% effort will be funded by Ellen Herbst, Chief, Addiction Recovery Treatment Services at the San Francisco VA Healthcare System from 2/28/25-7/31/25.


The Project Policy Analyst applies professional concepts to conduct analytical studies or projects of moderate scope and complexity to address a variety of policy, research and procedural issues. Fully analyzes issues and problems, gathers data and information, finds and evaluates alternatives and makes sound recommendations.

  • This position will serve two separate projects, including providing support for UCSF's Black Health Initiative, and a project pertaining to Veteran health and smoking cessation for Veterans living with HIV.
The incumbent's role would include conduct of qualitative research related to Veterans living with HIV who smoke. Duties would include organization of databases, creation of databases and survey instruments, participant outreach and recruitment, collaboration with VA colleagues and co-investigators, conduct of focus groups, and coding of data at study end. Recent (past 24 months) qualitative experience and experiences within VA healthcare systems strongly preferred.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $62,500 - $93,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the School of Medicine at UCSF. The mission of the Department is research, education, patient care and public service. The Department has more than 450 full-time faculty at four sites - Parnassus, Mount Zion, Veteran's Administration Medical Center, and San Francisco General Hospital - and approximately 60 divisions. Central Administration at the Parnassus/Laurel Heights sites is responsible for directing the administrative functions of the Department via its sites and divisions, including the provision of research administration services for its faculty. The Division of Infectious Diseases consists of 110 faculty, fellows, and staff whose work is grounded in deep commitment the highest standards of clinical care and teaching, as well as, research leading to new approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diseases. The Division of Infectious Diseases employs and trains leaders in academic, superb clinical researcher scientists and basic scientists, and outstanding clinicians. Our faculty are leading experts in adult infectious diseases.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • One or more years prior experience working with rodents in a biomedical research setting.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Excellent quantitative skills.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, calendaring (including google calendars and outlook), cloud storage (REDCap, Qualtrics), and other online tasks.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree in a laboratory-related field, or 1-2 years prior experience managing a biomedical laboratory.
