What You'll Do

The Strategic Initiatives Advisor reports to the Director of Waste Management and is accountable for leading strategic initiative efforts for the Waste Management department. The position is responsible for the cost effective, technical execution of compliant waste management support for a wide-ranging scope to include; weapon material/weapon-related material (WM/WRM) disposition, securement of an alternative disposal strategy for classified matter, integration of support across the Waste Management organization to customers, chairs the Waste Review Team, and other strategic initiatives as assigned by the Director of Waste Management. Escalates/resolves issues, as needed, with the Director of Waste Management, Area Managers and their Senior Management.

Specific responsibilities:




  • Single point-of-contact andrequired to act on the behalf of the Waste Management Organization related to the technical execution of compliant waste management support
  • Leads efforts in problem solving, addresses safety concerns, performs management reviews, applies lessons learned, and reviews and responds to NNSA evaluations/findings
  • Implements company, division, department, and customer requirements
  • Provides instructions and guidelines; and resolves barriers to performance, inconsistencies in requirements, and work priority conflicts
  • Stands in the gap to resolve the most complex technical waste management challenges for the WM Director and Nuclear Security Enterprise
  • Participates in the annual National Defense Authorization Act, providing estimates to NNSA HQ on behalf of CNS Y-12
  • Provides policy input to YFO and NNSA HQ
  • May be required to lead first-of-a-kind initiatives and may be called upon to support regulatory revisions
  • The successful candidate shall demonstrate superior communication skills, both oral and written, and will be required to present technical presentations to internal and external audiences in support of the Y-12 mission for Waste Management

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree: Minimum 12 years of relevant experience
  • OR Master's degree: Minimum 10 years of experience
  • OR PhD: Minimum 6 years of experience
  • Twenty (20) or more years of education and/or relevant experience may be considered to satisfy educational and years-of-experience requirements for this posting

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Previous experience with chemical and radiological waste characterization, treatment, packaging, transportation, and disposal of waste generated at Department of Energy nuclear facilities
  • Prior experience with the Waste Acceptance Criteria at the Nevada National Security Site and/or commercial TSDFs
  • Formal training related to radioactive waste management, DOT, RCRA, Polychlorinated Biphenyls, and Radiological Worker II
  • Familiarity with DOE Project Management principles
