Software Engineer (Pittsburgh, PA) Life Unlimited. At Smith+Nephew, we design and manufacture technology that takes the limits off living. We are seeking a skilled and motivated Engineer to develop, maintain, and support software systems for preoperative planning applications. In this role, you will be responsible for designing and implementing software solutions that enhance surgical planning workflows for knee, hip, and shoulder replacement procedures. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including surgeons, sales representatives, and robotics engineers, to ensure seamless integration and usability of the software. Additionally, you will coordinate system improvements, troubleshoot issues, and provide technical support to optimize performance and reliability. This position requires a strong technical background, attention to detail, and the ability to work within a regulated medical device environment to deliver high-quality, impactful solutions. What will you be doing?
- Develop & Maintain Software: Design, develop, and maintain software components used for preoperative planning of knee, hip, and shoulder replacement surgeries.
- Customer Collaboration: Work directly with stakeholders to understand user needs and improve the planning process.
- Cross-Functional Teamwork: Collaborate closely with the Preoperative Planning and Robotics teams to enhance software functionality.
- Software Improvements: Identify, develop, and implement enhancements to optimize the preoperative planning workflow.
- Project Participation: Contribute to project teams by analyzing improvements, defining requirements, and developing software specifications.
- Meetings & Coordination: Attend departmental and project meetings to align on objectives and ensure software meets clinical and business needs.
- Execution & Delivery: Work within defined specifications to achieve project goals on time while maintaining high-quality standards.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Effectively coordinate with peers, project teams, and other departments to support new product development, product line extensions, and software enhancements.
What will you need to be successful?
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field required.
- Experience: 2-4 years of experience in software development, preferably in the medical device or healthcare industry.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Python, JavaScript, and at least one compiled language (e.g., C++, C#). Experience with software development in a regulated environment is a plus.
- Problem Solving: Strong analytical, creative, and structured thinking skills with a drive for execution.
- Knowledge: Familiarity with orthopedic procedures, including total knee, hip, or shoulder replacements, is preferred.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical concepts effectively.
- Software Tools: Experience with 3D modeling, visualization tools, and programming for medical applications is a plus.
