A successful candidate will be expected to conduct empirical research focused on the feeding biology of sap-feeding insects, specifically to characterize patterns of feeding behavior internal to plant tissues, as well as to characterize the tissue-level and systemic impacts of feeding behavior on plant health.

The successful candidate is expected to bring advanced expertise in techniques for studying feeding behavior, such as electropenetrography (EPG); expertise in techniques of micro-dissection, tissue-fixation, and histology for examination of insect internal morphology underlying feeding behavior and plant pathogen acquisition; and micro-dissection, tissue fixation, and histological examination of plant tissue exhibiting impacts of insect feeding. The successful candidate is expected to bring experience in advanced microscopy imaging to document insect feeding anatomy and impacts of feeding on plant tissues, such as light microscopy, scanning-electron microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy and/or other advanced imaging techniques. Applicants with expertise in invasive insects and/or vectors of plant diseases known to impact specialty crops of concern in Pennsylvania and the US, including spotted lanternfly, are especially welcome.
