Job Summary

Spectrum Brands has an exciting opportunity for a process engineer to join our St. Louis manufacturing team. Driven by consistent growth over the past several years, we are investing heavily into the facility, equipment, and processes in our plant to increase capacity and effectiveness. The process engineering role will play a vital part of our expansion and upgrade plans by researching alternatives and developing capital requests for new machines and processing lines. We currently utilize automated equipment such as robotic palletizers, bottle sorters, liquid fillers, and cap applicators and will continue to deploy the latest automation technology to increase the efficiency of our operation. In addition to developing capital requests, the process engineer will also work with our product development group to introduce new products and innovations. In addition, the process engineer is responsible for continuous improvement of our manufacturing lines in areas such as safety, quality, and efficiency.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work to improve key performance indicators (KPIs) focused on safety, quality, productivity, cost improvement, OEE, and 5S activities.
  • Manage documentation & control of all production line PLC programs and automation software.
  • Conduct routine trouble-shooting activities on the mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Support and document preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Direct and coordinate fabrication and installation activities of new equipment or processes to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and customer specifications.
  • Assist in the development of Standard Operating Procedures for equipment inspection and maintenance.
  • Assist with the design of products and/or mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
  • Develop, design, and implement annual capital plans and strategic projects.
  • Evaluate production capabilities for New Product Development (NPD) projects.
  • Lead and organize Lean Six Sigma activities to support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Identify and solve root causes of recurring downtime.
  • Identify ways to increase unit output.
  • Implement cost savings/improvement projects.
  • Maintain project and equipment files to ensure accuracy and availability.
  • Research and analyze data such as customer design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.
  • Plan the fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment, and development of methods and procedures for testing products or systems.
  • Supervise field installations and recommend design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions
  • This position has no direct supervisory duties.

  • This position is responsible for providing technical training on production line equipment as needed.

Education and Experience Profile

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 3 - 5 years relevant experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in consumer packaged goods, Lean Manufacturing, and root cause analysis is required.
  • Experience with writing and trouble-shooting PLC programs (ControlLogix, MicroLogix, RSLogix) is required.
  • Experience with VFDs is required.
  • Experience with Six Sigma Methodology is a plus.

  • Strong verbal and written communication/presentation skills.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate and partner with different functional groups and customers.
  • Must be detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated project management skills required.
  • Experienced computer user in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, AutoCAD.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement process and cost improvements.
  • Must be results oriented with strong problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

Work Environment

  • 25% office environment
  • 75% manufacturing environment
