Medical Resident Year 1-Small Animal Surgery

Kansas State University
United States, Kansas, Manhattan
1810 Kerr Drive (Show on map)
Mar 08, 2025
About This Role

The Veterinary Health Center at Kansas State University offers a three year small animal surgery residency designed to meet American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) requirements and simultaneously meet the requirements for the Master of Science degree at Kansas State University. We are proud of the track record of the small animal surgery residency program and residents at KSU. Every resident who has completed the program since 2000 has passed the ACVS exam on the first attempt (14 residents since 2000).

The small animal surgery section at KSU is composed of five board certified surgeons and is divided into Orthopedic and Soft Tissue services. The small animal surgery residency is further supported by board certified faculty in the anesthesiology, radiology, dermatology, cardiology, pathology, ophthalmology, oncology, and internal medicine.

Successful completion of the residency depends on completion of both the clinical residency and Master of Science degree requirements. The resident is required to submit an original manuscript to a refereed journal prior to completion of the residency. Supervision of the M.S. degree program is by graduate faculty within the Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine.

The resident will participate equally in the clinical surgery services during the three year period. During a portion of the third year, the resident may be responsible for a Chief Resident Service depending on ability. There are four focused rounds sessions required weekly of residents: case rounds, journal review rounds, Phase 1 exam rounds, and formal seminar presentations. Residents are required to participate in the emergency service of the KSU-VHC. Responsibilities will include night and weekend emergency duties on a rotating schedule.

Residents receive semi-annual written evaluations which are discussed with the Resident Advisor and Hospital Director. Annual reappointment is contingent upon continued satisfactory performance in all aspects of the program.

The resident must be present for orientation on the first day of the program.

The Veterinary Health Center is a modern, spacious facility on the campus of Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. The University is in the beautiful Flint Hills of Kansas with numerous recreational opportunities available.

Matched applicants must apply for a Institutional License with the Kansas Board of Veterinary Examiners.
