Job Description

Vertex Pharmaceuticals has an exciting opportunity for a Scientist to join the Primary Tissue Pharmacology group within the Pharmacology Department at our San Diego research site. We are seeking a motivated, creative, and innovative in vivo scientist with a deep understanding of ion channel and neuro physiology. A successful candidate will have hands-on experience in in vivo electrophysiology, while experience with data analytics and computational modeling is highly valued. A successful candidate will demonstrate flexibility and a strong desire to collaborate within a multidisciplinary drug discovery team.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, validate and execute in vivo studies, including the use of electrophysiological techniques, to support drug discovery projects
  • Analyze and interpret complex and multidimensional data and effectively document and communicate results
  • Provide deep insight through data analytics and computational modeling
  • Work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment and have excellent organizational and communication skills

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Background in Neuroscience or Pain and familiarity with drug discovery
  • Knowledge of ion channel physiology and pharmacology and applications to drug discovery, including combination pharmacology
  • Experience with in vivo electrophysiological techniques (e.g., microneurography, single-unit or multi-unit recordings, EEG); experience with primary ex vivo tissue models (e.g., spinal cord slice) is also valued
  • Demonstrates ability to analyze complex datasets and solve problems to attain crucial Project goals
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and attention to detail in preparing business critical documents (e.g. experimental records, SOPs, and study reports)
  • Ability to navigate and thrive in a fast-paced, highly matrixed work environment
  • Strong desire to be part of a highly innovative company aimed at transforming the lives of people with serious diseases, their families, and society

Education and Experience:

  • Degree in Physiology, Pharmacology, or related field
  • PhD and 2-5+ years, or Master's and 5+ years, or Bachelor's and 8+ years.
  • In-depth experience in the design, execution, and interpretation of in vivo/ex vivo studies

Pay Range:

$105,600 - $158,400

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
