Job Description

The Managing Engineer (Software/Java) will lead a team responsible for software design and development efforts to build and rollout new Allstate's Property insurance product lines that will replace legacy products. They collaborate closely with Digital Product Managers, Product Engineers, peers, and key stakeholders to deliver high-performing high-quality software products in an agile setting. The internal Allstate job title used for this role is a Software Engineer Associate Manager.

The Managing Engineer has a strong product understanding and puts the system user at the center of everything they do; ensuring that users receive the most value out of the products being developed. They own and manage running their application in production and are accountable for the success of their digital products through achieving key performance indicators. The Managing Engineer selects, leads, counsels, motivates, sets expectations, and evaluates small to medium teams. Additionally, they advise direct reports on administrative policies and procedures, risks, issues, problem resolution, and priorities. This person assists in defining, implementing, and prioritizing IT policies, procedures, and best practices. The Managing Engineer influences team and business results.

Key Responsibilities

  • Acts as a player coach in leading by example in day-to-day execution of the build out of technical product capabilities.

  • Leads and participates in inceptions and iteration planning meetings, infusing backlogs with technical input working in close partnership with the product manager.

  • Leads and participates in daily site, cross-site, and product team standups and other agile ceremonies.

  • Assists the effort of shaping the architecture and design of the product.

  • Serves as the anchor of the team and practices technical leadership; helping guide the team in choosing the right technology, solving technical problems, and resolving any technical conflicts within the team.

  • Coaches the teams and individuals in adopting and adhering to Engineering best practices.

  • Establishes continuous integration, continuous delivery, and continuous deployment pipelines and practices and advocates for a strong culture through personal behavior and coaching.

  • Co-owns and leads all incident responses and root cause management in partnership with Digital Product Manager

  • Leads and participates in knowledge sharing and contributes to the overall growth of the collective knowledge of the team and broader Engineering community.

Functional Experience

  • Strong understanding of computer science concepts, object-oriented design principles

  • Hands-on experience with Java and J2EE technologies such as Spring Boot, Spring Data, Spring IOC, Spring Annotations,

  • Experience on REST API's and familiarity with microservice architecture is required.

  • Experience with data modelling and familiarity with XML and JSON schema standards

  • Experience in backend development design and implementation; database (relational, NoSQL, caching), distributed messaging systems, security best practices, performance analysis and tuning

  • Experience with continuous integration and DevOps methodologies, preferred tools such as GitHub, Jenkins, SonarQube etc.

  • Experience developing continuous integration, continuous delivery, and continuous deployment pipelines for distributed apps.

  • Experience working in an agile work environment across organizational and geographical boundaries.

Experience

* 5 years of developing and implementing systems at scale with 1+ years in management roles (Preferred)

Education

* 4-year Bachelor's Degree (Preferred)

Compensation

Compensation offered for this role is $95,700.00 - 170,925.00 annually and is based on experience and qualifications.
