The Institute for Complex Social Dynamics (ICSD) and the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University are seeking a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher for a joint position. This unique role offers an exceptional opportunity to work at the intersection of large-scale complex social phenomena and cutting-edge machine learning techniques.

Research directions for this position are broad and flexible, encompassing (but not limited to): advancing machine learning techniques for better societal outcomes including aligning AI with human values and preferences, whether broadly or within specific applications; developing innovative machine learning methods to analyze complex societal systems; investigating the societal effects of AI and machine learning.

This position provides access to world-class resources and the vibrant interdisciplinary research environment at CMU, offering the chance to address some of the most pressing issues at the intersection of technology and society.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Carrying out advanced independent and/or directed research to achieve the objectives of the research project
  • Organizing and implementing complex research plans
  • Developing of methods of research, testing and data collection, analysis and evaluation, and writing reports which contain descriptive, analytical and evaluative content
  • Other duties as assigned

You should demonstrate strong proficiency in the following skills:

  • Analytical thinking and analysis
  • Problem solving and reasoning
  • Oral and written communication
  • Organization and planning
