Summary: The Transportation (Logistical) Services Driver is expected to perform animal caretaker and/or glassware/cagewash tasks. However, the Driver's primary tasks are providing transportation and warehouse support. Animal caretaker and/or glassware/cagewash tasks are secondary duties and the Drive shall not prioritize them before transport and warehouse tasks. The Driver will provide transportation and warehouse support during regular duty hours (7:00 AM to 3:30 PM or 0700-1530). They shall transport supplies, equipment, and animals, including the warehouse at Area B, and to/from external locations. Driver shall operate Government furnished vehicles, forklifts, carts, and handcarts. Off- post-trips shall not involve overnight stays. Work requires sitting, driving, climbing, working in a bent position, and carrying materials up to 50 pounds. Greater strength, effort and agility are required in the handling, capturing, and restraining of the stronger, more active animals. Work, as performed, exposes incumbent to unpleasant odors and noises, and may require contact with unpredictable, ill-natured, stronger animals which pose greater risks of injury, bites, scratches, etc. There is a hazard of burns and skin irritations from cleaning and decontaminating solutions. The incumbent must wear protective clothing or equipment such as gloves or other personal protective equipment, for prolonged periods.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
- Shall conduct all activities associated with moving animals, supplies and equipment and to/from other external locations, as required by the TPOC. Driver may be required to cross state lines in conduct of duties. Driver shall ensure compliance with Animal Welfare Regulations, all applicable guidelines and SOPs during transport.
- Provide logistical support to VMD when not actively driving. These include, but are not limited to, warehouse management, taking inventory of supplies and equipment, rotating stocks of supplies and equipment, replenishment of basic expendable supplies, moving equipment requiring calibration to and from medical maintenance support locations, and transporting materials between building.
- Shall conform to all applicable vehicle safety rules.
- Shall conduct and document a preventive maintenance check for all Government-owned vehicles prior to first use daily. Contract Employee shall report all vehicle repairs or maintenance required to the Contract PM.
- Provide monthly dispatch information to the Contract PM. This includes, but is not limited to, tags numbers, mileage, and completed dispatch sheets in the required format.
- Shall inform Contract PM of any damage(s) to the vehicle(s) and, as required by the TPOC and as directed VMD liaison with USAMRIID Logistics, assist in arranging repairs.
- Shall be trained and able to operate a forklift within three (3) months unless extended by the TPOC and COR after review of each individual extension request.
- Shall operate transport equipment and document operations.
Qualifications
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- Apply practical knowledge and technical expertise to resolve problems independently and in cooperation with other personnel.
- Shall work in Microsoft Word, SharePoint, MS Teams, Excel, Outlook and other software systems as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BPRP enrollment is required and will be held and maintained IAW the provisions in this contract and all applicable regulations.
- ALAT certification or higher, as defined by AALAS, is required prior to or within eighteen (18) months of hire.
- A valid state license for the category of vehicle being operated (to include, when necessary, a Commercial Driver's License) prior to starting work under the contract and NO history of suspension within the past ten (10) years is required.
- Capable of driving all other smaller general transport vehicles and carts as required.
- Minimum 1+ year animal husbandry experience in support of NHPs in a research setting is highly desirable.
- US Citizenship Required
- Variable work hours, to include 24/7 coverage, evenings/nights, weekends, Government holidays, and during unforeseen closures or circumstances shall apply, as requested to meet mission requirements.
- Must be able to successfully obtain and maintain a favorably adjudicated Secret security clearance eligibility, with no access to classified. *NACLC/ANACI is acceptable if completed within 5 years prior to enrollment.
- Ability to successfully pass a drug test.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with rodents, swine, rabbits, and ferrets in a research setting is highly desirable.
- Good Laboratory Practice experience is desirable.
