Overview
The Electronic Technician is responsible for setting-up, maintaining, and repairing electronic components, systems, and devices. This position must possess a detailed understanding of electronic principles and design, and willingness to keep up to date with advances in technology.
Responsibilities
Demonstrate a methodical and accurate approach to diagnose malfunctions, perform tests, and follow technical publications to ensure proper equipment function.
- Able to use hand or power tools and electronic test equipment to install, test, troubleshoot, inspect, fabricate, or modify systems, processes, and equipment within the assigned areas.
- Monitor, inspect and adjust equipment using manual or automated controls if applicable.
- Report process deviations or variances to appropriate personnel, interact as required with other staff, agencies, vendors, and outside contractors.
- Collect and compile data using computers or other electronic methods for maintaining parts inventory, operating records, technical documentation, and repair records or other documentation as requested.
- May work with other craft workers to maintain site equipment or participate in special projects.
- Notify supervision if additional attention or repairs are needed.
- Escort and monitor work performed by outside vendors in accordance with facility requirements.
- Complete and return required administrative paperwork on time as directed, (e.g., timesheets, vacation slips, classroom and computer-based training, log sheets, PM / PE / MODs, service records etc.)
- Other duties as requested or assigned to ensure timely project execution.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent, and at least two (2) years' experience in the electronics field, plus specific electronics training, or verifiable on-the-job training to independently perform troubleshooting, change electronic components and devices.
- Possess and maintain site specific training certification(s) as required, and the ability to demonstrate competency with the following: locating devices and supplies, ES&H procedures, technical documentation, input commands into an electronic device or display pad to recalibrate or reset electronic systems, complete required reporting documents.
- Work safely under general supervision, follow written procedures and verbal instructions, perform journey-level work, and manage time to complete assignments.
- Understanding of the following: basic math, written and oral communication, reading blueprints / schematics / diagrams.
- Good attendance, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work as part of a team or independently.
- Ability to follow oral / written instructions, exercise good judgement to complete assignments on time.
- Work safely under general supervision, exercise good judgement, and manage time to complete assignments.
- Basic computer skills and ability to use Microsoft Outlook email, payroll time entry, and complete required online training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree or higher in specialized technology applicable to the field of electronics and safety training equivalent to OSHA 10.
- Five years journeyman level experience in a relevant field or equivalent experience in a commercial or industrial facility and broad knowledge of other disciplines. (A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for two (2) years of job-related experience).
- Proficiency with Microsoft products, CMMS computer maintenance management systems.
- Knowledge of MSA gas sensors, monitoring systems, and associated test methods and equipment.
- Excellent problem solving and technical skills, and familiar with laboratory operations is a plus.
Conditions of Employment
- Possess and maintain a valid U.S. driver's license and demonstrate a good driving record (no significant violations such as DUI, loss of license, inability to obtain personal insurance or currently covered under a high-risk insurance policy, etc.).
- All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the IUOE Local 95 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Work Environment/Physical Demands
Work Environment
- Requires work in commercial government facilities (e.g., warehouse, offices, projects, labs, outside locations, etc. where mechanical equipment is being installed, tested, analyzed, monitored, or operated and / or maintained. Equipment may be loud and noisy and or have exposed moving components.
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks which requires following basic safety precautions.
Physical Demands
- Constant use of vision and mental alertness is required working in all types of weather (heat, humidity, sub-zero cold).
- Position may involve work indoor or outdoor locations where loud equipment with exposed moving components is being operated, monitored, or maintained.
- Able to perform all the typical repetitive physical requirements such as: walking, pushing, pulling, handling, grasping, kneeling, working overhead.
- Able to work in awkward positions for extended periods of time or in confined spaces.
- Position may involve routine carrying or lifting of 20 pounds (and occasionally up to 50 pounds), or working at heights, climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolds, and using scissors or aerial lifts.
- Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English to respond to visual and audible alarms.
Integrated Safety Management
- Observe and follow all corporate, federal, state and site environmental safety and health (ES&H) policies and procedures that pertain to the job classification being performed.
- Perform only those tasks in which you have the required training, competence, knowledge, skills, and abilities to prevent injury to one's-self, other employees, the public, or the environment.
- Hazard and situational awareness for ES&H risks associated with the work. Perform work safely in accordance with hazard controls.
- Report all unsafe operations, and, if necessary, exercise stop-work authority in any situation posing imminent or danger.
- Must wear proper PPE as required and ensure PPE is in acceptable condition.
- Maintain active involvement in the introduction, revision, and/or promotion of ES&H/ISM program activities.
- Keep office space, operating area, control room, mechanical room, warehouse etc. clean and orderly.
- Attend all safety meetings and stay current with assigned required training.
Hours of Work Typical shift is 8 hours per day, M-F daylight schedule, and must be able to occasionally work after hours on nights, holidays, and weekends. Schedule is determined by the company and business needs.
