Job Summary

By assisting the City Manager's support staff in the performance of their duties, the City Manager's Office Intern is given the opportunity to learn about city management and the functions and activities of municipal government.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This position serves as an entry-level position designed to expose the intern to operational, budgetary, and policy functions managed by the department. The intern will assist team members on existing or new projects and will gain work experience to increase their ability to compete in the workforce for other entry-level positions.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, support of the following:

  • Assist with organization and tasks related to roll out of Leadership Bootcamp
  • Assist with tasks in support of Women's Leadership Summit
  • Provide assistance in Directors/Managers Retreats as well as Managers Roundtable
  • Assist Leadership in the support tasks related to the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Champions Team
  • Participate in tasks and support duties as related to the Employer Inclusivity Branding Campaign

Peripheral Duties:
  • Perform other duties as needed in support of City Manager's Office.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work and communicate well with a wide range of people, including elected officials, City Manager, City department heads, Kirkland staff, and City residents.
  • Ability to work independently and quickly.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Some computer skills. Knowledge of Excel and Word desirable.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited college or university, preferably pursuing a degree related to public policy.
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, and computer skills required.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Work will primarily be performed at Kirkland City Hall. Job involves office/computer work and sitting for long periods of time. Some field work/site visits around the City of Kirkland and occasional attendance at evening meetings may be required.
