Hybrid Work Opportunity Enjoy work-life balance with our hybrid schedule allowing remote work most days, with in-office collaboration as required. This position requires occasional travel within Tennessee for on-site audits, advisory engagements, and stakeholder meetings. Travel for this position will be minimal and will be within the State of Tennessee.

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDOSHS) is responsible for ensuring the safety and general welfare of the public. The department's general areas of responsibility include:

Job Overview:

Join the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security's Internal Audit Division and help safeguard public safety through risk-based audits, compliance reviews, and advisory engagements. Your work will identify vulnerabilities and drive improvements across critical areas, including law enforcement operations, Driver Services, Homeland Security initiatives, information systems protecting sensitive data, and controls ensuring responsible use of public funds. As an Auditor 3, your findings and recommendations will directly influence departmental policies, enhance public safety procedures, and ensure Tennesseans receive secure, efficient government services they can trust.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership at all levels within the department.
  • Lead and/or participate in complex audits in accordance with IIA Red Book standards.
  • Analyze large datasets using Excel techniques to identify control weaknesses, operational inefficiencies, and potential fraud indicators.
  • Evaluate compliance with internal policies and state/federal regulations.
  • Evaluate internal controls for adequacy and effectiveness.
  • Prepare audit reports with actionable recommendations.
  • Lead and/or participate in special audits and investigations in response to leadership requests or emerging risks.
  • Manage multiple concurrent audit engagements while meeting strict deadlines.
  • Participate in the department's annual risk assessment process to ensure compliance with the Financial Integrity Act.
  • Mentor junior auditors and provide technical guidance on complex audit procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. A degree in Accounting or another analytically focused business field is preferred, but degrees in other disciplines (such as Criminal Justice) will be considered if the candidate has relevant experience in compliance, auditing, investigations, risk management, or process improvement.
  • Demonstrated project management skills with proven ability to manage multiple concurrent assignments.
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to draft clear, concise technical documentation and reports.
  • Ability to communicate complex findings to stakeholders at all technical levels.
  • Intermediate Excel proficiency (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, data visualization techniques).
  • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally within Tennessee.

What Sets You Apart:

  • 3+ years of experience in auditing, compliance, investigations, or risk management
  • Professional certification(s) such as CPA, CIA, or CFE.
  • Knowledge of Driver Services operations and licensing procedures
  • Familiarity with Tennessee state government operations
  • Experience with Diligent or similar audit management software
  • Knowledge of COSO, COBIT, or similar control frameworks
  • Advanced Excel proficiency (macros for automation of repetitive tasks, statistical analysis functions).
