Job Description

The City of Renton's Utility Systems division has an exciting internship opportunity for current students whose intention is working in the water, wastewater, and surface water engineering fields. We are looking for a candidate to assist with projects and tasks in the design, permitting, construction, maintenance and operation of water, wastewater, and surface water utilities to gain a wide variety of experience. In this internship you will be part of a team that makes an impact to our growing City. A demonstrated interest in water supply, sewage and drainage aspects of engineering is important for this role. This is a temporary position, limited to a one-year duration, and is anticipated to be full time during the summer months and part time during the school year. The internship is for up to 12 months, or graduation, whichever comes first.

SUPERVISION:

Reports To: Utility Systems Engineering Managers

Supervises: None

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Assist engineering staff with engineering analysis and other basic engineering calculations for surface water facilities, sewers, and water works; data analysis, routine office and field tasks, basic research, data collection, calculations and compilation for engineering studies, reports, and inventories; prepare, input and process forms and other documents as needed.
  • Understand and read engineering and other cartographic maps, representing multiple data sets.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of office and engineering records, reports, maps, and as-built drawings related to engineering operations and activities, update and file maps and plans.
  • Proofreading specifications, large spreadsheets, or database programs.
  • Assist in the preparation of cost estimates, plans, specifications, and contracts for engineering projects.
  • Coordinate communication and projects with other City departments and personnel, governmental and private agencies, various outside organizations, customers, and the public.
  • Perform related duties and tasks as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college pursuing a bachelor's (as a junior or senior) or master's degree in civil engineering or other closely related field.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Successful passing of background check.
  • Successful passing of a required driving record check.

COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong communication and computer skills.
  • Perform engineering mathematical computations.
  • Receive and provide information and services to other City departments and personnel, governmental and private agencies, various outside organizations, customers and the general public.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance; ability to travel to meetings and job sites, as required.
  • Operate a variety of office equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Drive to offsite locations to perform essential functions.
  • Move throughout facilities and buildings.
  • Ability to lift or move items weighing up to 20 pounds
  • Communicate with City employees and residents.
  • Bending, stretching, and standing for extended periods.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is performed in an office environment and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Work is performed within the right of way, and in high traffic conditions, on occasion.
  • Exposure to noise from equipment.
  • Noise level indoors is moderately quiet.
  • Noise level outdoors is moderately loud.

Recruitment Process:

This position requires driving and is also subject to a driving record check from the WA State Dept of Licensing (or other state equivalent). Driving records will be evaluated based on a points system depending on the infraction and severity.
