Executive Editor - Energy & Materials Transition
Job ID: 96502

Do you want to work on complex and pressing challenges-the kind that bring together curious, ambitious, and determined leaders who strive to become better every day? If this sounds like you, you've come to the right place.
Your Impact
You will join a group of publishing professionals within the Global Publishing team, which is part of the firm's Reach & Engagement function.
Our team supports authors in developing powerful editorial products that will make an impact on our many audiences.
You will work with highly skilled McKinsey colleagues from around the world to develop and publish distinctive content across digital and print platforms.
As an executive editor, you will engage and inspire colleagues through your thought partnership and leadership skills to advance the Firm's publishing objectives.
You will become fluent in McKinsey's production-related processes and resources, with strong editing, fact-checking, and content management support.
You will manage editorial publications and programs, coordinating with relevant McKinsey publishing groups and stakeholders, to ensure projects are completed, approved, produced, and published to meet tight deadlines.
You will act as a thought partner and service provider (e.g., line editor), working with McKinsey authors-typically senior consultants and industry/functional experts-to create publishing strategies that advance cell and Firm objectives.
You will develop persuasive storylines and write compelling drafts covering business topics, with a focus on the energy and materials transition (including sustainability, green business building, climate tech, oil & gas, electric power, agriculture, and mining).
In collaboration with authors and other stakeholders, you will shape content copy (e.g., a PowerPoint presentation, an outline, speaker notes) into a range of editorial products such as articles, white papers, reports, blog posts, podcasts, and videos.
You will review and edit content that rigorously follows conventions of written English and ensure consistency of voice/tone/style and alignment with firm style and risk/reputation guidelines, playing an advisory role with authors in discussion and development of changes.
You will clearly communicate with internal and external teams and relevant McKinsey leadership in support of an increasing volume of editorial projects.
You will lead projects/workstreams independently or with a designated team.
You will stay up to date on business news and trends, as well as the firm's research, to ensure communications are informed by current public discussion/research and aligned with the firm's position.
You may be asked to support entry-level and junior editors as part of their and your career development. You may be asked to engage in additional ad hoc editorial projects as well.
Your Growth
Driving lasting impact and building long-term capabilities with our clients is not easy work.
You are the kind of person who thrives in a high performance/high reward culture - doing hard things, picking yourself up when you stumble, and having the resilience to try another way forward.
In return for your drive, determination, and curiosity, we'll provide the resources, mentorship, and opportunities you need to become a stronger leader faster than you ever thought possible.
Your colleagues-at all levels-will invest deeply in your development, just as much as they invest in delivering exceptional results for clients. Every day, you'll receive apprenticeship, coaching, and exposure that will accelerate your growth in ways you won't find anywhere else.
When you join us, you will have:
  • Continuous learning: Our learning and apprenticeship culture, backed by structured programs, is all about helping you grow while creating an environment where feedback is clear, actionable, and focused on your development. The real magic happens when you take the input from others to heart and embrace the fast-paced learning experience, owning your journey.

Your qualifications and skills
  • Bachelor's/University degree; advanced degree in journalism a plus
  • 10+ years of experience in business writing and editing, including digital publishing, preferably for an English-language business publication or professional-services firm
  • A deep understanding of global business trends; detailed knowledge of and interest in the energy and materials industries and sustainability
  • Data literacy and familiarity with audience engagement (e.g., SEO, social media)
  • Strong mastery of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint) and team share tools (e.g., SharePoint, Slack, Zoom)
  • Proficiency and fluency in verbal and written English is required; other language skills are a plus
  • Excellent editorial skills (e.g., writing, editing), judgment, and business literacy, with ability to rapidly absorb complex ideas and distill them into accessible copy for global audiences
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written, presentation)
  • Confidence in interactions with senior staff and subject-matter experts; strong ability to achieve consensus across multiple stakeholders
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to challenge content based on industry knowledge
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills; ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, manage complex processes, and meet short- and long-term deadlines
  • Ability to work independently in a low-structure environment and to deal with ambiguity; understanding of when to proactively seek guidance, and willingness to do so
Please submit a resume, cover letter, and no more than three writing samples (only business-related articles, please). Your cover letter should include a succinct (~200 words or fewer) answer to the following question: What do you like about McKinsey.com content, and what areas do you think could improve and why? Please be candid and specific.
