Starting Salary: $53,616

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) - BARGAINING UNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under immediate supervision, performs entry-level professional nutrition assessment and counseling duties providing services to individuals, groups, and families in a public health center or clinic, and performs related duties as required

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:



  • The Public Health Nutritionist I performs entry level professional nutrition screening, assessment and counseling activities to participants of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).
  • They enroll clients and certify the eligibility of participating clients.
  • Daily tasks include interviewing clients to obtain past medical history, lifestyle and eating behaviors, dietary recall and food frequency data to complete an individual nutritional care plan for women and children with low to moderate health risks.
  • The Public Health Nutritionist I provides nutritional counseling on evidenced based practice guidelines to emphasize the benefits of well balanced meals using the approved My Plate curriculum.
  • They work with pregnant women and new mothers on an individual basis to describe ways to maximize the benefits of the supplemental foods provided by the program.
  • They schedule follow-up visits with the clients to assess and evaluate the outcome of prescribed care plans, and work with a team of health care professionals to provide additional resources if needed.
  • The Public Health Nutritionist I maintains care plans and client files in an electronic system and prepares reports on clients serviced for quality assurance reporting.

Monday through Friday

8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Monday thru Friday

Some additional hours may be required in case of public health emergency.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics, Foods and Nutrition, or a directly related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience provided that the minimum education requirement is met.

Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications:

Must be a Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation within six months of hire

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or a skills assessment test as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:



  • Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics, Foods and Nutrition Science, Community Nutrition, or Public Health Nutrition.
  • Bi-Lingual Spanish.
  • Previous experience counseling clients regarding good nutrition and changes in dietary practices required for improved health.
  • Completed 20 semester hours/credits in Food and Nutrition courses.
  • Previous experience interviewing clients regarding medical history, background and dietary intake.
