The Respiratory Therapist 2 (RT 2) serves as a role model and resource that assists and supports the clinical team. They help to ensure consistently high-quality care and facilitate excellent clinical respiratory care services. The RT 2 is responsible for providing direct patient care and assessment; interdisciplinary consultation, oversight for technical and clinical performance, support clinical activity of staff as directed by leadership and performance improvement monitoring. Clinicians provide a full range of cardiopulmonary diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients of all age groups. They obtain, review and interpret data and assess the need for and response to respiratory care interventions in consultation and conjunction with medical, nursing and other disciplines to optimize patient care planning and delivery. They respond to cardiopulmonary emergencies, provide airway maintenance, manual and mechanical ventilator support using a variety of devices and techniques and administer oxygen and other therapeutic gases, humidity therapy, inhaled aerosol medications, bronchial hygiene, lung expansion therapies and instruct patient's family and continuing care providers in the administration of respiratory procedures and the proper use of respiratory therapy equipment and supplies. RT 2s assure that ventilators are patient ready ad calibrated, sent to Clinical Engineering as appropriate and help assure that medical supplies and equipment are available for patient care.
In the absence of an RT 3 the RT 2 functions as a relief supervisor. RT 2s may be asked, per operational needs, to focus their leadership and educational duties for periods of time on relief charge, precepting, training and education, mentorship, or specialty areas of practice such as pediatric care.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
- California Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)
- National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
- Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) required within one year of hire.
- American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR.
- American Heart Association (AHA) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
- American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
- Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program with an AS in Respiratory Care
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience as an RCP in an acute care hospital.
- Possesses the knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. This includes but is not limited to the ability to perform all of the required procedures and assessments and possession of a thorough understanding of the techniques and rationale for the selection and application of pulmonary lab and blood gas lab procedures.
- Knowledgeable with all applicable infection control and health and safety policies and procedures related to position.
- Performs basic and advanced cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures and calculations, collects and interprets data to facilitate objective patient assessment and effective care planning. Assists other health care professionals in the interpretation and clinical application of results.
- Knowledge and skill in the operation of pulmonary lab, blood gas lab, and bronchoscopy equipment.
- Demonstrates sensitivity and a respectful manner toward patients and visitors.
- Ability to prioritize patient care based on: Emergent needs, patient safety, resources available to meet identified needs, and routine care.
- Demonstrates effectiveness in spoken and written communication.
- Ability to work independently, problem solve and exhibit good time-management practices.
- Responsible for maintaining reliable work habits, attendance, and completed assignments.
- Ability to establish and maintain productive and positive working relationships with all team members.
- Demonstrated knowledge of patient assessment pre, during, and post diagnostic testing and invasive/non-invasive procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively with intra- and inter-departmental teams.
- Basic computer skills: Data entry, e-mail, E.M.R., and Microsoft Word.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully teach and mentor.
- Working knowledge of basic management regarding chain of command, and conflict resolution.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Continuing maintenance and development of clinical skills and technical competency in adult/pediatric/neonatal, emergency pulmonary support, applications, procedures and equipment.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements (JCAHO, Title 22, HCFA, and CMS).
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience and demonstrated abilities in performance improvement processes and planning and conducting in-service education and training
- Experience performing invasive and non-invasive pulmonary procedures in acute care or academic setting.
- Demonstrated team leadership experience
- Knowledgeable with all applicable infection control and health and safety policies and procedures as implemented by the department and UC Davis Health.
