Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Physics Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the team.

In this role, you will play a key part in the development and testing of next-generation silicon pixel detectors for the Inner Tracker (ITk) upgrade of the ATLAS experiment at the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) at CERN. Your responsibilities will include coordinating and executing quality control (QC) testing for hundreds of pixel detector modules, as well as contributing to the development of data acquisition (DAQ) systems and the automation of software testing tools. You will also provide scientific and technical support to staff and students involved in module production at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), helping to ensure the success of this critical large-scale project. Limited involvement in additional activities of mutual interest can be considered.

What You Will Do:

  • Assist with scientific and technical expertise required for the electrical testing and QC of the ITk silicon pixel modules.
  • Complete the development and commissioning of the module testing infrastructure at LBNL (cold boxes, visual inspections setup, etc..) and of their control software. Support their maintenance during production.
  • Perform module QC testing, including verifying data, visually inspect parts and updating local and project-wide bookkeeping.
  • Oversee shipping of components to the downstream assembly sites
  • Assist in development, maintenance and deployment of Linux-based custom testing and DAQ software to perform module testing.
  • Work in a team with students, technical and scientific staff participating in the pixel module production at LBNL
  • Participate in special projects/studies which may arise due to any new problems which develop in the course of production.
  • Exercise independent judgment and contribute in an original manner at the professional level.
  • Consult/coordinate with physicists and engineers at LBNL and collaborating institutions as needed.
  • Ensure proper documentation of procedures as well as ATLAS-required implementations

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Carry out R&D related to silicon detector technology and contribute to publishing results.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field
  • At least one year of hands-on experience with silicon tracking detectors or comparable scientific instrumentation, such as beamline systems, spectrometers, focal plane arrays, or particle/radiation detectors.
  • Proven ability to contribute effectively in a collaborative research environment.
  • Proficiency in software development using both Python and C++, with experience working in Linux-based environments and version control systems such as Git.
  • Experience working in an electrical testing lab, including the use of equipment such as power supplies and multimeters.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with excellent organizational, analytical, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze research data and present findings clearly at seminars, scientific conferences, and technical meetings.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with pixel detector preferred
  • Some basic knowledge of databases
