Position Overview
The University of Kansas Edwards Campus and American Sign Language and Deaf Studies Department invites qualified scholars and professionals to apply for a regular lecturer position teaching Advanced ASL graduate and undergraduate courses. These courses place an emphasis on advanced language competencies including discourse, vocabulary development and register variation.

Lecturers are untenured, non-tenure-track members of the faculty. Positions vary and are dependent upon the need, if any, each semester for development and/or instruction of course(s). Primary role is instruction, with no obligations to perform research or service. The appointment dates will vary based on the type of lecturer appointment and the timeframe for the preparation and instruction of the course(s).

Advanced ASL courses for the American Sign Language and Deaf Studies BA/BGS program at the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park. The courses for this program will be taught exclusively at the Edwards Campus or Online and may run on a standard or non-standard course schedule.

The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.

Due to complex state employment laws, the University of Kansas may be unable to hire fully remote workers for this position outside of Kansas. Job Description
100% - Regular Lecturer Duties:
Teach and/or develop a specified number Advanced ASL undergraduate/graduate courses per semester for the American Sign Language and Deaf Studies program.

Common examples of courses for which lecturers would be needed: ASLD 505 ASL V and ASLD 506 ASL VI
  • Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, the lecturer must make arrangements for a substitute.
  • Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide timely feedback to students, and assign grades.
  • Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required.
  • Be available for reasonable scheduling of appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.
  • Adhere to all Departmental, College and University policies.
  • Lecturers may work with Program Director to determine format and schedule for course(s).

Required Qualifications
  1. A master's degree from a nationally accredited university in American Sign Language, or closely related field, is required by the start date of the appointment.
  2. At least three years' experience teaching ASL; minimum of one year in higher education.
  3. Experience teaching intermediate/advanced ASL courses including ASL III, ASL IV, ASL V and ASL VI

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience with Signing Naturally curriculum and/or True Way ASL.
  2. Experience using software such as GoReact.
  3. ASLTA certification by appointment start date.
  4. Experience using Canvas LMS.
  5. Experience and comfort facilitating virtual ASL class sessions on Zoom or comparable platform.
