Your Opportunity

The Supply Chain team is looking for motivated professionals to facilitate the distribution of our great products to customers and consumers. These personnel can analyze production metrics against market needs in Supply & Demand Planning, focus on product transportation through Logistics, or ensure the shelves of your local grocery store are stocked by Direct Store Delivery.
The Director of Transportation Operations provides overall leadership and direction to the Transportation Department. The responsibilities of this position are to differentiate Smithfield Foods from a Transportation / Logistics perspective through consistent least cost and on-time performance and to attract, train and retain employees with the skills and motivation to achieve these objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Manage over-all freight costs to meet stated objectives and provide the least cost while providing expected service levels by negotiating with carriers for volume contracts, managing the carrier base and working with sales and marketing toward a common known objective.

  • Contribute to cost savings to meet over-all company objectives by consideration of routes and reducing the miles traveled.

  • Develop Transportation department using latest technologies to create a competitive advantage for Smithfield Foods in transportation and customer service.

  • Provide ongoing leadership and support for company training programs for department staff.

  • Prepare for increased responsibility and advancement by implementing a staff development program for high potential employees.

  • Responsible for the development, implementation and tracking of Transportation department delivery metrics to communicate and report the value added by the transportation department.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university and 10+ years' of experience in Transportation, Logistics or Customer Service; or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.

  • 7+ years of demonstrated experience in team management/development or project leadership is required

  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills.

  • Ability to work through complex, unstructured problems.

  • Ability to communicate and express ideas clearly and concisely, in both written and verbal formats.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Transportation Management tools.

  • High level of organizational planning, teamwork, analytical reasoning, and adaptability.

  • Strong negotiation skills.

  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.

  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and guidance to transportation managers as well as cross functional teams across the organization

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
