Summary: Performs general housekeeping duties to keep all assigned buildings and areas at Shaw Nature Reserve(SNR) clean and organized in support of a quality workplace and visitor experience. Job duties also include setting up and taking down tables and chairs and preparing audiovisual equipment and other needs for programs and events throughout Shaw Nature Reserve. Responsible for tasks described at all SNR facilities, including: Dana Brown Overnight Center, Adlyne Freund Center, Maritz Trail House, Carriage House, Glassberg Pavilions, Bascom House, Edgar Anderson Center, and other sites throughout the SNR grounds. Scheduling flexibility is required; this position is regularly scheduled for evening, weekend and holiday shifts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Event Set-up and Support:
Sets up and/or takes down tables, chairs, and audio visual equipment in all SNR facilities.
Performs housekeeping and grounds maintenance during and after special events and programs.
Responds promptly to housekeeping requests.
Performs general daily housekeeping duties in all SNR facilities, including: restrooms, offices, classrooms, public spaces, walls and furniture; maintains all types of floor surfaces.
Performs assigned tasks to ensure all areas are clean and presentable, including: sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, washing surfaces and windows, and other duties as necessary.
Cleans restrooms at all SNR facilities.
Cleaning Dana Brown Overnight Center lodges, shower house, and assembly building after group use, including cleaning bunk beds and use of commercial dishwasher and laundry machines.
Monitors and maintains adequate inventory of paper products, trash bags, and cleaning supplies in areas required. Proactively communicates needs with Supervisor to ensure an adequate inventory of all supplies.
Performs special cleaning projects such as shampooing carpets, stripping and waxing floors, vacuuming vents, cleaning refrigerators and microwave ovens, desk cleaning when cleared, event chairs and tables, golf carts, vehicles, event waste cans and signage, and deep cleaning of kitchen facilities, windows and other areas as directed.
Performs minor repairs such as spot painting where needed; Cleans and stores walk-off mats when necessary; monitors and replaces light bulbs as needed at all assigned sites.
Picks up trash, replaces trash can liners, and services recycling containers. Ensures that all recycle, compost, and landfill materials are placed in the correct containers.
Removes leaves and other light debris using electric leaf-blowers from hard-surface walkways in high visitation areas.
Assists with snow removal on entrance pads and steps throughout the Nature Reserve.
Maintains inventory of bagged sand at facilities across the Nature Reserve.
Remains alert, courteous, and helpful to visitors at all times. Maintains general knowledge of SNR grounds and programs. Provides information or directs visitors to additional information, if needed.
Responds to visitor needs on site and assists in Nature Reserve closing procedures.
Maintains an understanding of Visitor Center operations and procedures.
Provides staffing coverage for the SNR Visitor Center during scheduling gaps for primary Visitor Services Staff, including lunch breaks and other scheduling gaps as necessary, sometimes on short notice.
- Requires frequent operation of Garden vehicles such as mini-trucks, golf carts, trucks, or other similar vehicles both on and off property.
- Operates all Garden equipment in a safe, responsible manner; maintains general care of tools, and equipment. Reports equipment maintenance needs to Supervisor.
- Carefully observes maintenance and safety issues (e.g. broken exit lights, loose steps/railings, etc.) in assigned work areas and reports issues to supervisor, safety, and maintenance staff as appropriate.
- Ensures that all applicable safety standards are followed. Adapts or modifies work methods to reduce hazards. Reports all accidents, injuries and near-miss accidents immediately.
- Meets expected attendance guidelines.
- Follows and adheres to established policies and procedures, including but not limited to Employee Handbook, Garden Safety Guidelines and Department Policies.
- Behaves& communicates in a manner that promotes and fosters a culture of teamwork, cooperation, and respect within our division and throughout the Garden with all employees, supervisors/managers, volunteers, visitors and others.
- Ensures personal appearance is clean and professional.
- Performs other duties as assigned. Compliance with all employee policies, including acceptable attendance, is expected.

Qualifications and/or Experience:
- Minimum of (1) year relevant work experience.
- Ability to read any special instructions and to understand label on cleaning products.
- Strong Customer Service Orientation; presents a professional attitude at all times under scrutiny of general public.
- Meets productivity standards; completes work in timely manner; demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; follows instructions; welcomes and applies feedback to improve performance.
- Ability to use computer for accessing schedules and task list, completing trainings, and email communication.
- Ability to set up basic Audio-Visual equipment (computer and projector) for events & meetings.

- Proficient ability and experience using a PC and Microsoft Office suite to generate and respond to Garden-related emails.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's and clean driving record (prior to employment).
- Ability to move, push, pull, lift and carry objects weighing at least 50lbs without assistance(i.e., load, unload and move supplies, medium to heavy tools and equipment).
- May be required to perform tasks at varying heights (i.e., climb ladders and bending to clean)
- Requires pushing, pulling, standing, walking, bending, stooping, twisting and reaching for extended periods of time-- 90% or more of the workday is standing on feet.
- Ability to use buffers/shampoo equipment to clean floors if assigned.
- Demonstrated dependability and adherence to all safety regulations.
- Ability to use various cleaners and chemicals effectively and safely.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions (i.e., in temperatures over 100F as well as temperatures below 0F, in rain, snow and other inclement weather conditions as needed).
- Actively works hands-on with other Nature Reserve employees at times to complete maintenance tasks.
- Comfortable working in immediate proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner, answering questions regarding Shaw Nature Reserve facilities.
- Scheduling flexibility that allows working weekends and holidays.
