Job Title: Database Engineer, Associate - Data Management

Job Summary: The ideal candidate will design, implement, maintain, and evolve a scalable, flexible data management and analysis system compliant with federal data security, sharing, and interoperability requirements. You will play a critical role in developing tools for data collection, storage, quality control, analysis, and sharing within client support team and with the broader research community.

Key Responsibilities

Data Management, Analysis, and Sharing



  • Develop, maintain, and enhance a scalable and flexible data management system for the collection, management, storage, analysis, and sharing of diverse biomedical datasets.





  • Ensure interoperability with existing NIH-funded databases such as ImmPort, IEDB, CEIRR, and BRCs.





  • Implement FISMA, HIPAA, and Common Rule-compliant data security and privacy practices for human subject data.





  • Develop tools and templates for standardized metadata and data submission, including automated data ingestion capabilities.





  • Facilitate data integration and transfer between Vaccine Centers and the DMCC systems.





  • Manage de-identification and anonymization of human subject data for public sharing.





  • Generate periodic data status reports and quality control summaries.



Software Development



  • Design and implement user-friendly web-based data entry, query, visualization, and analysis tools.





  • Support the development and maintenance of public and private client web portals for data access, tracking, and reporting.





  • Build systems to track client-generated reagents, resources, vaccine candidates, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).



Data Quality Control



  • Develop and maintain automated validation, error-checking, and quality assurance procedures for submitted datasets.





  • Generate and present data quality reports and maintain thorough documentation (user guides, system SOPs, version control logs).



Data Interoperability and FAIR Compliance



  • Implement FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles for all data management and sharing activities.





  • Collaborate with external NIH-supported databases and repositories to ensure standardized data formats and metadata.



Program Support and Coordination



  • Support the coordination of client working groups and facilitate data-related meetings and cross-collaborations.





  • Contribute to the preparation of scientific manuscripts, reports, and presentations involving data management and integration.





  • Provide user training and consultation to client investigators and stakeholders



Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Bioinformatics, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).





  • 5+ years of experience in database engineering, data management, or bioinformatics systems development.





  • Experience working with biomedical or clinical research data.





  • Familiarity with NIH data resources such as ImmPort, IEDB, and CEIRR databases.





  • Understanding of data privacy and regulatory requirements related to human subjects research.





  • Experience with cloud-based data solutions (AWS, Azure) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).





  • Exposure to advanced analytics, machine learning, or data visualization libraries (e.g., Pandas, Matplotlib, D3.js).





  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MongoDB).





  • Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, R, SQL, and JavaScript.





  • Experience developing APIs and data pipelines for data ingestion, transformation, and sharing.





  • Knowledge of federal data security policies (FISMA, HIPAA, Common Rule).





  • Familiarity with FAIR data principles and scientific data standards.





  • Strong background in web portal development and user interface design.





  • Excellent documentation, communication, and collaboration skills.



Compensation and Benefits

The projected compensation range for this position is $100,300 to $129,800 per year, benchmarked in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The target salary is $ 114,900. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. Salary at LCG is determined by various factors, including but not limited to role, location, the combination of education/training, knowledge, skills, competencies, certifications, and work experience.
