Summary of Objective:

The Occupational Health Nurse plays a critical role in promoting and advocating for the health, safety, and well-being of our employees in a manufacturing environment. This mainly autonomous position, is responsible for providing timely and effective medical and mental health crisis intervention, managing work-related and non-work related illness and injury response, and supporting return-to-work efforts in collaboration with the EHS and HR teams. The Occupational Health Nurse will ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations, facilitate health education and wellness initiatives, and serves as a key resource in maintaining a safe and productive work environment through collaboration with all departments. This position works closely with the Global Occupational Health Department and site EHS staff on best practices to develop policies & procedures that support PCI's Health & Safety programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Case Management/ Injury and Illness Management

  • Independently assess injured/ill employees, including the severity of condition and determination of the immediate course of action, often with minimal medical history. Provide emergency first- aid when necessary and identify, in a timely manner, when and how to refer out for illness/injury beyond the scope of OHSA first-aid.
  • Manage Workers' Compensation claims, initiate and maintain medical case management, working closely with Human Resources and applicable department leaders, to ensure employees return to work safely, expedite claim resolution, and minimize lost time and impact to the employee, as well as minimizing unnecessary cost to the company.
  • Maintain timely completion of new-hire health screening processes, with support from QPS and Human Resources; provide information and education during new hire orientation sessions.
  • Responsible for ensuring all employee medical screenings are completed in a timely manner and in compliance with OSHA and/or other regulatory agencies.
  • Provide timely and appropriate physical and/or mental health crisis, ensure appropriate first- aid and emergency care is provided to employees; ensure site Medical Emergency Response team members operate within their scope of practice, and stay engaged by regularly attending required certification training classes, and maintaining attendance to quarterly internal training classes.
  • Maintain confidential records of work-related injuries and illnesses as per OSHA & HIPPA regulations & guidelines.
  • Lead the Rockford site's Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) & Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA); team members operate within their scope of practice, and stay engaged by regularly attending required certification training classes, and maintaining attendance to quarterly internal training classes.
  • Analyze, interpret, and utilize injury/illness trend data and the most current OH best-practices to create effective and appropriate training/education to Medical Emergency Response Team members, Mental Health First-aider's; coordinate and facilitate in-person training classes and mock-drills, at minimum, every quarter.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret, and utilize illness/injury trend data, along with OH best practices to provide health education to employees, assist EHS in communicating and educating employees on safety practices, including but not limited to, the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and ergonomics.

Risk Assessment and Management

  • Partner with EHS, Operations, Early Intervention, and HR to develop and implement health, wellness, and safety policies & procedures.
  • Partner with and support EHS, Industrial Hygiene, and the Early Intervention Specialist (EIS) in assessing workplace environments for potential health hazards, such as chemical exposures, noise, and ergonomic risks. Recommend mitigation efforts on health risks and promote a safe work environment.
  • Collect and analyze data and trends to identify work-related health risks and partner with EHS, Operations, EIS, and HR on safety improvements to reduce future incidents.
  • Ensure all routine health screenings, such as respiratory clearance exams, health assessments, and other new hire/fit-for-duty assessments are completed and records are updated in a timely manner and files are maintained per regulation.
  • Stay up to date on the latest Occupational Health best-practices, methodologies, and regulations to ensure they are followed and compliance is maintained at PCI.

General Duties:

  • This position requires travel between nine separate buildings within the Rockford campus, sometimes emergently.
  • This position will require weekend work and may require extra hours.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to all PCI, cGMP, and GCP policies, procedures, rules.
  • Attendance to work is an essential function of this position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Manager/Supervisor.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and an active and unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Illinois.
  • 5+ years of Occupational Health, Emergency Department, and/or Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse experience.
  • Experience with Workers Compensation claim management and/or Medical Case Management.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Advanced Computer Skills: Ability to perform the most complex computer tasks and operate various computer programs such as, Smartsheets, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and others as applicable.
  • Full Professional Proficiency: Ability to speak, read, write, and communicate fluently, accurately, and effectively; providing culturally competent care, and maintaining consideration of all gender identities.
  • Ability to adapt written and verbal communication style to individual and collective needs.
  • Very High Reasoning: Ability to emergently define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in math or diagram form and deal with several abstract/concrete variables.
  • High Standard of Report Writing
  • Ability to identify and emergently resolve problems effectively.
  • Ability to effectively present information to various people as the job requires.
  • Ability to work autonomously as a licensed medical professional, within scope of practice, in adherence to Illinois Sate Nursing Laws, under the guidance of an off-site Medical Director, and within PCI policy and procedures.

Preferred:

  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) qualification
  • Physical Therapy and/or treatment and prevention of Musculoskeletal Injuries experience
  • Experience in Manufacturing, especially in the pharmaceuticals and/or bio-pharmaceuticals industry or similar.

The base salary hiring range for this position is ($69,920 - $79,000) plus eligibility for an annual performance bonus. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including but not limited to specific and relevant experience, education, credentials, geography, and subject matter expertise.
