Description

DEFINITION

Under supervision, to perform routine sub-professional engineering field and office work; to take traffic counts and compile statistics; to serve as a member of a survey party; perform technical drafting to create update and modify drawings; and to perform related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class learn and perform routine, office and field sub-professional work. Incumbents perform routine drafting, serve on a survey party, compile statistics, make routine mathematical calculations and follow an established schedule in setting up traffic counting equipment. Positions in this class perform work that is highly structured, and which is performed in accordance with established instructions. Incumbents receive thorough instructions when tasks are initially assigned and after training are expected to perform duties without constant supervision. Work is reviewed periodically upon completion and while in progress. Incumbents are expected to refer most variations in work to the supervisor for instructions.

Examples of Duties

Performs drafting required for Civil Engineering work, such as contour, cross sections, plans, profiles, exhibits, maps and other documents in compliance with City and other standards; maintains files for engineering plans, maps and related documents; maintains familiarity with the properties and testing procedures of engineering materials; calculates quantities for estimates, prepares and checks estimates; updates sewer and water plots; updates the City map; uses standard City protocol to check plans for completeness and accuracy; hand drafts as-built changes to original plans; conducts research of existing utilities and facilities to incorporate into plans; communicates with supervising engineers; prepares charts and graphs; sounds wells, records well information, collects water samples, inspects pavement condition; establishes and updates computer data bases; serves as a member of a survey party engaged in field survey work; uses survey instruments; keeps field notes of readings and observations; places grade stakes; makes property line, topographical and construction surveys; drafts maps and drawings from records of field surveys, property descriptions and construction notes; sets up traffic control devices while surveying on public streets; checks elevations; takes survey field notes; makes engineering computations required for design and survey work; checks elevations; answers inquiries and complaints from the public; prepares and checks estimates; drafts plans and maps; maintains office engineering files; prepares charts and graphs; conducts traffic surveys; records and files traffic accident reports; programs traffic counters; collects traffic data; enters traffic data into computer; prints traffic data from computer; keeps traffic logs; performs minor repairs to traffic counting equipment; draws plans; labels and hangs plans; calculates inspection fees; receipts for inspection fees; checks proposed construction projects for issuance of permits; operates blueprint machine; operates City vehicles; operates personal computer; and performs related work as required.

Typical Qualifications

LICENSE REQUIRED

  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License and a good driving record.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, including or supplemented by courses in drafting, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry;
  • Up to two (2) years of college-level coursework in civil engineering may be substituted for the required experience.
Experience:
  • Two (2) years of responsible sub-professional experience in engineering work.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation;
  • Basic surveying procedures;
  • Basic drafting techniques;
  • Methods, materials, tools, equipment and software used in drafting;
  • Basic geometry and trigonometry;
  • Accurate record-keeping methods;
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
Ability to:
  • Perform manual and computerized engineering drafting;
  • Make basic engineering calculations;
  • Read blueprints;
  • Read and interpret engineering plans;
  • Understand procedures and functions and apply without immediate supervision;
  • Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices;
  • Maintain accurate records;
  • Read, understand and apply moderately difficult materials;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Strength: Medium work-lifting, carrying and/or pushing 50 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Possession of a valid California driver's license and good driving record will be required prior to hire. Proof of citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S. will be required at the time of hire.
