Role Summary

The Sr. Test Engineer works within the test operations team to execute system level Powertrain testing as part of Rivian's product development process. They will collaborate closely with fellow test engineers to execute comprehensive system-level testing, drive innovation in our test facility capabilities, and partner with stakeholders to develop robust testing methodologies. This role also involves spearheading the automation of testbed operations for maximum efficiency and developing sophisticated post-processing routines to maximize data quality and provide actionable feedback to our engineering partners.


Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute system-level development and validation testing of electric powertrains and vehicles within a state-of-the-art lab environment.
  • Transform complex test data into clear, concise technical reports, providing insightful analysis.
  • Develop and align with test standards that define data acquisition setups, accessory equipment specifications, and data quality assurance and repeatability protocols.
  • Maximize testing efficiency and data integrity through the strategic application of advanced methodologies, including statistical Design of Experiments (DoE) and the development of automated test scripts.
  • Define and implement electric drive unit test profiles within automated test scripts
  • Proactively troubleshoot testing challenges involving powertrain test beds and cutting-edge devices under test, driving towards swift and effective resolutions.
  • Actively contribute to departmental continuous improvement initiatives, fostering a culture of innovation and efficiency.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other Rivian teams, providing technical expertise in the generation and execution of Rivian Test Standards and offering valuable input on test setups and development/validation plans.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (e.g., Electrical, Mechanical, Automotive) with a minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in a relevant testing environment.
  • Proven experience in powertrain product development engineering within a test lab setting, encompassing validation, development, and/or performance and emissions testing.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting and analyzing tests at both the powertrain and vehicle levels is highly preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills with a proven track record of effectively performing data reduction, in-depth analysis, and generating comprehensive technical reports.
  • Solid understanding of electrified powertrain system design principles and key performance attributes.
  • Proficiency in utilizing automotive control module development software (e.g., ETAS INCA, Vector CANape/CANalyzer) and configuring network communications to control modules and testbed software.
  • Experience in configuring and parameterizing AVL PUMA test automation systems, including the development and implementation of automated test routines, is a significant plus. Familiarity with other industry-standard test automation software is also valued.
  • Exceptional flexibility and adaptability to thrive in a dynamic environment with evolving test requirements and development standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage tasks effectively with minimal supervision.
