Beef Research & Teaching Farm

Job Description

The University of Missouri is seeking qualified individuals to oversee the care and management of cattle and sheep at its Beef Research and Teaching Farm. Duties related to this position include assisting in research protocols, daily care of feedlot and/or pasture-based animals, manufacture and delivery of feed, maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities, and maintaining detailed records in line with standard production and research practices while following animal care and use (ACUC) protocols.

The University of Missouri's Beef Research and Teaching Farm serves as a real-world laboratory that allows the University to develop practical solutions to beef cattle producers through cutting-edge research and to provide students with learning opportunities related to the care and management of beef cattle.

Responsibilities: This a full-time position that will primarily involve working with faculty to implement protocols important to the care and management of beef cattle at the University of Missouri to support its research and teaching missions. The position provides hands-on management and coordination of animal research, teaching, and daily operational management of the Beef Research and Teaching Farm in Columbia, MO. The farm contains a 600 head capacity feedlot facility equipped with feed monitoring equipment and a herd of approximately 250 head of replacement heifers and cows. The successful candidate must adhere to all protocols approved for the care of cattle and work with faculty and graduate students to carry out research or teaching activity.

These responsibilities include support of cattle on feedlot and on pasture, and all associated facilities and equipment. Additional duties include, but are not limited to, the operation, maintenance and repair of equipment needed in the care and management of cattle.

General Allocation of Effort:

  • 60% Care and management of cattle in line with approved research and teaching protocols, and management of student workers
  • 25% Maintenance, repair and oversight of facilities and equipment used in the care of cattle
  • 10% Maintaining records
  • 5% Other duties as assigned

Desirable Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Applies general and/or agricultural knowledge developed through education and experiences
  • Experience and ability to perform hay production
  • Experience working in an educational setting
  • Proficiency in tractor and implement operation
  • Ability to drive and back a livestock trailer
  • Ability and willingness to work holidays, weekends, and hours outside of business hours
  • Ability to successfully Artificially inseminate cattle.
  • Experience mixing feedlot rations using feed mixing truck and available software programs
  • Possesses knowledge of methodologies, practices and procedures within the Agricultural function and applies this knowledge to complete routine to complex assignments.
  • Ability to communicate and explain policies and procedures to advise and assist others, team, customers, and/or management.
  • Experience teaching groups of students
  • Experience with troubleshooting and repairing Grow-Safe feed system
  • Applies agricultural practices and ensures compliance with regulations
  • Assists in the planning and development of educational programs and materials
  • Assists in the preparation of budgets, inventories and plans for overall farm management and function
  • Ability to follow research protocols and perform routine to complex assignments using existing procedures
  • Performs a variety of standard agricultural assignments and responsibilities and makes recommendations for improvement/efficiency, as necessary
  • Works with standardized procedures and practices to achieve objectives and meet deadlines, noting when obstacles may impact outcomes
  • Ability to develop working relationships with various internal and external parties
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Shift

Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Occasional weekends as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Certifications Required or willing to obtain within one year of hire:

  • Beef Quality Assurance Program (BQA) certification
  • Public Pesticide applicators license 1B
  • Valid Driver's License, CDL preferred.
Preferred Qualifications

More than 2 years of experience handling and working cattle in both feedlot and pasture-based systems.

Masters Degree Preferred.

Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $52,915.20 - $83,408.00 annually.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
