The Newsroom team

The Newsroom is a growing group within the Okta Comms team. Our core objective is to build brand awareness, engagement, and trust through audience-first content that positions Okta as an industry leader. We manage the Okta Newsroom strategy and execution, including content, design, and promotion.

The Art Director, Okta Newsroom opportunity

Okta is seeking a visionary and experienced Art Director to shape the visual identity and elevate the storytelling of the Okta Newsroom. As the Art Director, you will be instrumental in crafting compelling imagery, establishing a cohesive design system, and pioneering innovative approaches to news presentation, including data visualization. This is an exciting opportunity to build and lead the visual direction of a high-impact content hub for a leading technology company. This role will report to the Newsroom Director and work closely with both Comms and Okta's internal Studio team.

What you'll be doing



  • Develop and execute visual concepts: Translate complex narratives and information into engaging and impactful visual content across various formats, including articles, social media, infographics, videos, and interactive experiences.
  • Establish the Newsroom's visual language: Define and implement a comprehensive design system encompassing typography, color palettes, photography, illustration styles, and interactive elements that align with Okta's brand guidelines and the unique needs of a news-driven environment.
  • Champion innovative news design: Research, pilot, and implement cutting-edge news design techniques, with a strong emphasis on storytelling and data visualization, to enhance clarity, engagement, and understanding of key information.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally: Partner closely with editorial, design, PR, and web development teams to ensure visual consistency, brand alignment, and effective communication of news and stories.
  • Maintain brand standards: Ensure all visual output adheres to Okta's brand guidelines while pushing creative boundaries within the Newsroom context.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends: Continuously monitor and evaluate emerging design trends, technologies, and best practices in digital news and visual storytelling.
  • Quality control: Review and approve final Newsroom designs from extended partners and agencies, ensuring that all assets meet Newsroom standards and requirements before they are published.
  • Manage visual assets: Establish and maintain an organized system for managing and archiving visual assets.


What you'll bring to the role & what we're looking for



  • A compelling portfolio demonstrating exceptional design skills and a strong understanding of visual storytelling, ideally within a news, editorial, or brand journalism context
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in graphic design and art direction, with a significant portion focused on digital content and visual storytelling for a B2B tech company; Newsroom design experience is a plus
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing comprehensive design systems for digital platforms
  • A passion for and demonstrable experience in creating effective and engaging data visualizations
  • Strong art direction and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and presentation skills
  • Proficiency in industry-standard design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite)
  • A keen eye for detail and a commitment to high-quality visual execution
  • Experience working with content management systems (CMS) and an understanding of web design principles
  • A bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communication, or a related field
  • Basic video editing skills are not required, but a definite plus

Below is the annual base salary range for candidates located in California, Colorado, New York and Washington. Your actual base salary will depend on factors such as your skills, qualifications, experience, and work location. In addition, Okta offers equity (where applicable), bonus, and benefits, including health, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), flexible spending account, and paid leave (including PTO and parental leave) in accordance with our applicable plans and policies. The annual base salary range for this position for candidates located in California (excluding San Francisco Bay Area), Colorado, New York, and Washington is between:
$128,000 $192,000 USD
