Position Overview

Position Summary
Under general direction of the Director of Broadcasting, the FM News Director is responsible for preparing local and regional news and public affairs programming for KENW-FM.


Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional customer service in all interactions with students, staff, and the general public.
  • Prepare and produce local and regional newscasts for KENW-FM.
  • Supervise and help produce informational features with various Chambers of Commerce and other community organizations.
  • Respond to questions and requests from listeners.
  • Be knowledgeable and up-to-date about news events taking place that may impact upon our state, region, and/or various communities served by the KENW Public Radio Network.
  • Perform interviews in the studio as well as in the field and know how to edit these into segments or features for broadcast.
  • Assist in maintaining a "local news" presence on the KENW web pages.
  • Be prepared to share news stories with either CNN or Associated Press (AP).
  • Coordinate and assist in making news interviews and features available on the KENW web site.
  • Be prepared to make live weather or other emergency announcements on the air.
  • Assist KENW-TV with news or public affairs programming when needed as station trade-out for FM engineering services.
  • Perform public relations duties for the Broadcast Center and KENW-FM.
  • Keep up-to-date with FCC rules dealing with broadcasting and political candidates.
  • Track, compile and submit required quarterly FCC Issues Reports and other required government documentation of KENW-FM news and public affairs coverage by deadline.
  • Perform related duties as assigned
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in broadcasting, journalism, or a related field OR an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
  • At least two years of experience in broadcast news is required.
  • Knowledge of public broadcasting and radio operations is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures and structures.
  • Computer literacy, including programs such as AudioVault, Audio Editing Programs, and Office and Outlook.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to maintain friendly customer service and professional demeanor with all constituencies.
  • Project coordination and organizational skills and the ability to work as a team player.
  • Ability to present a professional, pleasant, and cooperative attitude in coordinating communication between staff and the general public.


Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

  • Work is generally performed during normal work hours. However, news gathering activities may sometimes require weekend and evening work.
  • Work is sedentary in nature, sometimes requiring exerting up to 10 pounds frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • The role requires the ability to perform the following physical activities: reaching with arms and hands, handling objects, fine finger manipulation, speaking clearly, actively listening, and visual acuity sufficient for computer work and reading.
