TITLE: Laser/Bender Operator

REPORTS TO: Production Supervisor (Metals)

STATUS: Full-Time, Regular, Non-Exempt, Hourly

REPRESENTATION: UAW Local 135

WORK LOCATION(S): 901 Broadway Ave NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates the Sheet Laser, Tube Laser and/or Tube Bender machine, and assists other machine operators as needed.
  • Completes product changeovers, selects and sets up material needed, loads programs, and calibrates machine parameters to ensure optimal performance of the equipment.
  • Inspects products for conformance to set standards.
  • Produce consistent and accurate parts with minimal scrap created.
  • Lifts raw materials and final products either manually or by using a forklift, cart, or other material movement tools.
  • Perform all necessary inventory transactions as required.
  • Works with team members to maximize productivity and efficiency.
  • Provides a great level of attention to detail and focuses on the given task.
  • Keeps work area clean and organized.
  • Follows all safety rules and ensures work meets quality standards.
  • Works in a fast-paced environment with fast changing priorities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Pass a qualification test for position eligibility
  • Prior Laser Cutting or Bending experience preferred
  • Ability to obtain a forklift license required
  • 2+ years of machine operator experience required

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge about shield gases used during laser cutting operation.
  • Proven measurement and mathematical fraction/decimal conversion skills.
  • Ability to distinguish material types including Aluminum, Steel, Stainless Steel, Copper and Brass.
  • Good understanding of quality control principals.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work regular schedules set forth by the Management team.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Standing for entire shift.
  • Able to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Able to twist, bend, stoop as needed.
  • Safety shoes are required.
  • Safety glasses are required.
  • Hearing protection required.
