Berkeley Lab's (LBNL) Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division (MBIB) has an opening for a Research Assistant to join the Fleming Lab.

In this exciting role, you will assist on a project using both atomistic and coarse-grained molecular models to explore the spatial arrangement and dynamics of molecules pertinent to light harvesting in synthetically modified protein assemblies.

This position has an anticipated start date of June 2, 2025.

What You Will Do:



  • Perform standard laboratory procedures using molecular simulation and electronic structure methods to understand and predict excitation dynamics in biomolecular assemblies.
  • Prepare samples and collect experimental data to verify these models.
  • Keep accurate records of all work performed.
  • Participating in group meetings and seminars.
  • Assist with reviewing and organizing research data and prepare research presentations and publications.



What is Required:



  • A Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Chemistry, Physics, or related areas and demonstrated laboratory skills in Chemistry, Physics, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow written laboratory protocols.
  • Strong analytical skills including the ability to identify issues and problem solve technical and methodological issues that arise during the research.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer and related software programs including MS Office Suite, Google Applications, Adobe Acrobat, and Zoom video conferencing.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to accurately organize, document, and maintain laboratory research data, results, and records.
  • Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team environment.

  • Appointment Type: This is a full time, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay, 1 year, Term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • Salary Information: This position is expected to pay an hourly rate of $22.40 - $27.50 for job code 588.1 and is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.
  • Background Check:This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work Location: This position will be performed onsite at Hildebrand Hall on the University of California, Berkeley campus located in Berkeley, CA 94720. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. This position will typically operate Monday-Friday from 8:00am-5:00pm.
