Summary: The Project Engineer III provides technical expertise and decision-making toward the execution of new product development programs, customer-facing sustaining engineering activities, internal cost- and quality-improvement activities, and other areas which require a high degree of technical aptitude and subject matter expertise. Typically, the Project Engineer III operates within an internal IPDT (Integrated Product Development Team (i.e. design engineers, CAD designers, manufacturing engineers, test lab technicians, program managers, etc.) providing technical leadership and acting as the technical focal for both internal and external customers. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Under minimal to no supervision, the Project Engineer III position shall be responsible for duties including but not limited to:
- Technical leadership and execution of new product development programs against customer technical requirements and procurement specifications alongside the internal product development team.
- Involvement and technical coordination of all phases of new product development; including, but not limited to technical proposals, design of customer-deliverable hardware, technical support of development part fabrication, qualification testing and support of certification and Entry-into-Service (EIS), and sustaining engineering efforts.
- Leadership of small cross-functional teams, typically co-located.
- Maintaining and developing knowledge of state-of-the-art engineering disciplines, processes, and tools
- Ownership, delegation, coordination, assignment, and execution of tasks alongside the internal product development team
- Ensuring designs are compliant to customer technical requirements, procurement specifications, and industry standards and regulations.
- Providing technical input, review, and approval for engineering drawings, documentation, and analytical outputs
- Preparing project status presentation and communication for both internal leadership and external customers.
- Establishing and defending company- and/or program-advantageous technical positions.
- Identifying and executing improvement activities to reduce cost and cycle time and improve product quality.
- Interfacing with vendors and suppliers to ensure adequate technical communication and understanding, as well as product compliance
- Leadership of and/or direct contribution toward both internal and external audits (i.e. AS9100 audits, customer quality audits, etc.)
- Establishing oneself as a recognized technical subject matter expert within the organization, including participation in the development of new business opportunities and developing/maintaining long-term relationships with key customers to support the company's commercial strategy
- Proactively communicating within the company in order to facilitate transparency and the fulfillment of project goals, as well as providing technical insight and facilitating cross-functional cooperation and collaboration.
- Achieving and maintaining an understanding of the company's objectives and commercial strategy, and recognizing, communicating, and contributing to new business opportunities alongside the leadership team.
- Decomposing and intuiting customer/project needs and requirements even when requirements are nebulous or incomplete
Desired Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. M.S. Preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in metallic or composite ducting and motion compensator design per ARP 699 guidelines as Project / Systems Engineering Focal, or equivalent experience in the following aerospace product areas:
- ECS (Environmental Control System), bleed air, or AMS (air management system)
- Valves (pneumatic or electromechanical)
- Heat Exchangers
- Turbo Machinery
- Fuel Tank Inerting Systems (FTIS, OBIGGS, OBOGGS, NGS, etc.)
- Pneumatic Wing-Anti Ice Systems
- Ram Air Systems
- High Pressure or Low Pressure pneumatic systems
- Structural design
- Experience with aircraft certification to EASA, Transport Canada, CAAC, and/or FAA 14 CFR FAR 25 requirements
- Experience from program award (kick-off) to Milestones such as: PDR (Preliminary Design Review), CDR (Critical Design Review), PRR (Production Readiness Review), SOF (Safety of Flight), EIS (Entry-into-Service).
- Project Management Skills and good interpersonal skills, including working with internal or external customers and resources.
- Experience delegating work and supervising non-direct reports (engineering support staff: design engineers, analysts, drafters, test technicians).
- Experience writing certification documentation, such as: ATP, QTP, QTR, etc.
- Experience with sheet metal and/or composite manufacturing / forming processes.
- Experience with the MRB process with engineering disposition authority.
- Test experience per RTCA-DO/160 or MIL-STD-810 (vibration and environmental tests)
- Participates and/or leads in internal and external audits.
- Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to read / support the creation of 3D models and 2D drawings with dimensioning and tolerance per ANSI/ASME Y14.5 standards.
- Thorough understanding of industry specifications, such as MIL, AN, MS, NAS, ASTM, AMS, etc.
- Experience with support of engineering cost estimates for change-of-scope and new business RFQs.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
