National Grid is hiring a Lead Engineer, Gas Planning and Design Engineering based in New York State. Work locations that can be considered: Melville NY. Job Purpose
Responsible for the engineering, design and technical oversight during construction of projects relating to gas regulating stations and the associated telemetering, control, and instrumentation systems.
Key Accountabilities
- Perform instrumentation and controls engineering and design for natural gas construction projects which may include regulating facilities, large metering, natural gas heaters, remote operated equipment, and gate stations.
- Develop and implement programmable logic controller (PLC) control schemes for flow switching, metering, remote loading, flow control, pressure control, and burner control.
- Assist I&R field crews in troubleshooting and commissioning equipment such as remote terminal units, water bath heaters, dryline heaters, hydronic heat systems, and gas analyzers.
- Develop and verify Pipe and Instrument Diagram (P&ID) drawings for regulator stations and burner systems.
- Develop and verify Control Diagram drawings for regulator stations.
- Act as subject matter expert (SME) in process hazard analysis (PHA) design reviews for natural gas regulator stations, heaters/burners, gas quality, odorant injection, gas detection and other gas related equipment.
- Collaborate with Gas System Operator (GSO) and CNI to develop the necessary telemetry system for regulating stations using control room management techniques.
- Incorporate applicable Standards, Procedures and State/Federal statutory requirements into Gas system designs.
- Interpret and incorporate corporate process safety procedures.
- Identify and specify materials to be used in association with gas construction projects.
- Compile and review as built documentation for accuracy and incorporation into mapping and document management systems.
- Train, guide and develop junior I&C team members.
- Participate and/or lead inter-regional projects activities. This may require travel outside of assigned service territories.
- Participate in Storm restoration activities or other system emergencies as called upon.
Knowledge & Experience Required
- Bachelor of Science Degree in an Engineering discipline is required.
- Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred.
- Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam is preferred.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license in New York State is preferred.
- With a PE license, at least 8 years of gas engineering experience is required.
- Without a PE license, at least 10 years of gas engineering experience is required.
- At least 3 years of leadership experience is preferred.

- Experience in the application of design and construction standards, engineering drawings, and procedures.
- Experience in the application of instrumentation and control systems for natural gas applications.
- Technical knowledge of natural gas system design and operations including natural gas industry codes and regulations, engineering and environmental codes and standards.
- Knowledge of OSHA, PHMSA, and applicable State regulations.
- Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple projects within budget and time constraints
- Demonstration of a high level of personal initiative and ability to interact with a diverse group of company personnel, contractors, regulatory representatives, and town/city officials in a positive collaborative manner.
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively both internally and externally to the organization.
- Must have a valid driver's license with safe driving history.

- Develop project bid specifications and assist in the procurement of engineering and/or and construction services.
- Manage external engineering design firms, contracted to support projects, to ensure all work is performed in accordance with company standards, within budget and on schedule.
- Perform design quality peer reviews.
- Establish and lead, as necessary, an engineering design project team to develop and manage all engineering aspects of a project, up to and including project closeout and compilation of as-built documentation.
- Effectively communicate project information with involved internal and external stake holders.
- Implement change control procedures as necessary to track design changes initiated by engineering or field operations and identify any associated risks that may result. Document any requests to deviate from approved/agreed to parameters and seek authorization where required.
Downstate NY Salary $146,000 - $172,000 a year Please be advised that due to the nature of this position, incumbents are subject to federal Drug & Alcohol safety regulations governing US Department of Transportation ("DOT") covered positions, including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA). As such, the Company's testing programs and policies regarding the use of federally prohibited drugs or alcohol, for recreational or medical purposes, will remain in effect for these safety-sensitive, DOT covered positions.
