The Vice President/Chief Security Officer is responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing the short term and long-term strategic direction of operational performance of physical security and enterprise risk across a large multi-site healthcare system (13 hospitals and hundreds of satellite/ambulatory facilities as well as a Home Health division primarily in Massachusetts with some sites in New Hampshire).
This executive leader ensures the protection of patients, staff, visitors, facilities, and assets while supporting regulatory compliance, emergency preparedness and a patient-centered culture of safety and trust.
This position works to reduce and mitigate incidents, risks and threats along with liability and loss. This position proactively identifies significant risks, designs and implements strategies and programs to reduce and prevent loss of organizational assets. This is done through committed, competent staff, state of the art integrated security technology, training and awareness educational programming, and prudent policies and procedures.
This position works closely with the senior executive team and many corporate and departmental partners to develop and implement plans, policies and procedures.
Responsible for developing and managing a large budget and financial resources, managing personnel (15 direct reports with a staff under them of over 800) and maintaining relationships with vendors, suppliers, and outside local, state and government agencies.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develops, implements and monitors the policies, procedures, systems and programs in accordance with accepted standards and hospital administrative policies that ensure protection and safety of hospital and satellite facilities, personnel, patients, visitors and their property.
  • Moves toward centralization and standardization when possible and needed for security processes, procedures, investigative processes, training, physical security technology and equipment.
  • Creates opportunities for cross training, cost efficiencies, career pathways, process efficiencies throughout the enterprise.
  • Develops and maintains a liaison working with federal, state and local regulatory and law enforcement agencies, including MBTA leadership, City Engineering and Traffic Departments, to ensure their assistance, correction and/or control of situations which may affect the hospitals or enterprise.
  • Functions as the principal investigator of serious incidents and serious reportable events. Serves as the liaison between MGB and law enforcement authorities on specific incidents which may involve legal action.
  • Serves as the primary resource person on all matters pertaining to healthcare safety and security. Works collaboratively with hospital administration and department representatives to provide coordination of activities which would bring about a security conscious environment for employees, patients and visitors.
  • Ensures that the Police and Security Departments for each entity have high quality standards and are staffed with the appropriate mix of personnel to support and accomplish departmental goals and objectives. Provides for proper orientation, training, human resources processes, and in-service education for staff members; assures compliance with established policies and controls the quality and quantity of work performed. Facilitates continuous improvement efforts with creative and progressive programs and initiatives. Creates, manages and utilizes comprehensive data collection, trending and reporting processes allowing strong understand of problem areas, need for resource deployment and process improvement.
  • Prepares and monitors the department's annual capital and operations budget.
  • Prepares or arranges risk level, customized security protection plans for dignitaries, prisoners, celebrities and victims of harassment, hate crimes, domestic violence, threats, stalking and any other type of violence.
  • Ensures that hospital security regulations are enforced, and that criminal violations and security problems are investigated and appropriately reported to management and law enforcement agencies; conducts proactive security surveys/risk assessments to determine vulnerability and risk to the institution and communicates risk reduction recommendations to appropriate parties. Responds to emergencies or major occurrences that require departmental managerial intervention; facilitates repairs to areas where security/safety breeches are issues.
  • Develops strategies and planning for parking policies using operational data and knowledge of healthcare parking logistics. Prepares RFPs for standardization when possible, for equipment, supplies, labor services and lease consistency. Responsible for leadership in the management of all parking operations for patient, employee and visitor parking in owned and leased parking facilities.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required
  • Thorough knowledge of enterprise security risk management and some knowledge of parking/commuter service operations and applicable laws.
  • Strategic thinker with a proven ability to develop and execute on plans and initiatives. Requires the ability to assess, prioritize and successfully resolve issues and management at a multi-task, multi-location and intra/inter departmental level.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications: positive attitude, tact and diplomacy, active listener, collaborative and empathetic. Effectively interact with people of different levels and cultures; establish positive relationships, gain trust and respect of others.
  • Handle a variety of foreseeable and unforeseeable situations. Can work well under pressure, being agile and able to pivot quickly. Must be able to prioritize multiple initiatives and lead and develop people.
  • Strong problem-solving skills a must for this role: critical and analytical thinking, good judgment, prioritizing, industrious and creative resolutions for positive outcomes. Ability to deal with, and deescalate, anxious/stressed people and manage aggression. High volume of activity; handle complex interpersonal situations and crisis management scenarios. Ability to recognize potential impacts of decisions and ensures best positive outcomes to prevent/reduce injury, liability, and/or negative publicity.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to develop and execute successful business strategies
  • Professional orientation: attuned to current management, motivation, mediation, negotiation, coaching theory and practices to support performance; pursue personal growth and development of self and the employees supervised; knowledge of personnel relations and corrective action.
  • Competency in ensuring compliance with local, state and federal laws, hospital policies and procedures. Ability to maintain security, risk, EMS certifications and licensures.
  • Technology: Knowledge and use of integrated security technology to include: access control, video management, duress and other alarm systems, communications equipment, and first aid equipment.
Position Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in criminal justice, security management, business or a related field.
  • 10-12 years of progressively responsible leadership in a similar environment.
  • CHPA and/or CPP certification and experience with institutional security/enterprise security is strongly preferred.
  • Active involvement with Security organizations a major plus.
