Job Summary

The Senior Inspector Field Operations is focused on providing effective on-site guidance and technical assistance to railcar repair providers related to inspection and repair of AITX owned Tank and Freight railcars. Responsibilities include developing shop audit plans to ensure quality of repairs, qualification events, general preventive maintenance repairs, and to ensure regulatory compliance integrity of AITX owned railcars. The Senior Inspector Field Operations will also ensure work performed meets all applicable AITX repair policies and procedures and will create technical audit reports describing the findings during the site visits.

Job Duties

  • Physically inspect railcars and/or tankcars and create a report to reflect car condition, adherence to applicable AITX / customer requirements and mandatory AAR and FRA regulated repairs
  • Ensure shop compliance to instructions for the repairs required
  • Review all parts and material marked for repair and communicate any issues with the BRC or removed material.
  • Inspect exterior and interior coatings as required.
  • Determine the proper coatings application or need for repair if necessary.
  • Review records such as car processing, fleet data forms, records of cars received and shipped, and photo documentation as necessary to provide up-to-date information on the car and shop for evaluation.
  • Ensure AAR quality assurance standards are met
  • Follow all safety rules and procedures
  • Interact with crew members and supervisors in a team environment
  • Maintain work area in a clean and orderly manner
  • Comply with the established safety policies and support continuing awareness for safety
  • Identify railroad damaged cars, participate in joint inspections, prepare JIC's, and negotiate with railroad representatives as required to assure maximum settlements are obtained
  • Interact with engineers and fleet operations staff on inspection planning.
  • Comply with the established AITX and shop safety policies and support continuing awareness for safety.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

Experience, Education, Requirements

  • High School diploma plus 2 years of college or equivalent railcar experience is desired.
  • Knowledge of tank car and freight car repair methods, material requirements, and inspection processes including experience with AAR and FRA rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of weld symbols, weldments, and weld inspection including Visual Inspection and Dye Penetrant Testing.
  • Knowledge of using a variety of tools and equipment including but not limited to AAR Rule 1 gages, WFT/DFT gages and other inspection tools.
  • Knowledge of basic NDT methods such as Visual Inspection and Dye Penetrant Testing and Ultrasonic Testing is a plus.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, procedure manuals, and have proven mechanical aptitude
  • Computer proficiency, attention to details, time management, verbal, and written communication
  • Must be able to pass background check, pre-employment physical and drug test.
  • Must be able to travel 75% or more.
  • Position requires the ability to climb up on top of, underneath and inside of rail and tank cars.
