Responsibilities

Horizon Health, the national leader in the management of inpatient psychiatric programs, together with Billings Clinic in Billings Montana, seeks a Chief Clinician for our inpatient, Behavioral Health Program.

The Chief Clinician assists the Program Director in the development and implementation of a high-quality treatment program and the supervision of the clinical staff. The Chief Clinician is responsible for providing high quality patient care, displaying advanced skills in psych diagnosis, treatment planning, group treatment, individual treatment, family treatment, and discharge planning. Additionally, they are expected to function well as a member of the interdisciplinary team and participate in the community relations program.

  • Promote patient health by supervising the clinical process
  • Assess and reassess the needs of the patient, and communicate the needs of the patient to the treatment team; document assessments appropriately
  • Ensure initial assessment is completed within 24 hours of admission or per unit/hospital policy; reassess routinely throughout patient's stay with the Program
  • Direct, plan and provide clinical care in accordance with patient diagnosis and needs
  • Conduct therapies in accordance with patients' diagnosis and needs
  • Ensure in efficient discharge planning for patients is executed
  • Ensure progress notes and assessments are completed according to program procedures
  • Ensure the development of individualized treatment plans for each patient
  • An active member of the interdisciplinary team
  • Conduct individual, family and/or group psychotherapy sessions, displaying good theoretical knowledge of psychopathology, therapy principles, and good treatment technique
  • As needed, and using approved methods, assist in safely placing patients in seclusion or restraints; observe suicide/seclusion precautions; including physical requirements for physical holds and safe transport of patients
  • Participate in a 24-hour call process to handle emergency situations
  • Engage in timely, efficient discharge planning. Works in close conjunction with patient, family, nursing staff and attending physician. Has good knowledge or referral/placement process and available community resources
  • Assist the Program Director in policy development and procedures for intake assessment, treatment program, treatment planning, discharge planning, special treatment procedures and maintenance of a therapeutic environment
  • In conjunction with the Program Director develops and implements an in-service training program
  • Create, implement and enforce clinical staffing plan for direct reports ensuring, sufficient nursing personnel to provide for patient care needs in keeping with appropriate regulatory requirements
  • Recruit, interview and recommend qualified clinical staff for the Program
  • Provide leadership and direction in accordance with the client hospital guidelines and consistent with nursing and Program goal philosophies
  • Ensures all therapists and counselors complete assignments, treatment plans, progress notes and other reporting data in a timely and high-quality fashion
  • Provide for professional growth and development of clinical staff through identification of needs, development of individual training plans, participation in training programs, encouragement of formal continuing education efforts
  • Monitor clinical personnel performance on a continuous basis and conduct regular performance evaluations for direct reports
  • Follow voluntary and involuntary procedure/process
  • Interpret the treatment needs of the patient to nonclinical staff assigned to the patient
  • Ensure patient dignity and respect patient values
  • Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional and psychological support to patients, families and friends
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality; and protects operations by keeping patient and program information confidential
  • Operate within ethical standards
  • Collaborate with physicians, multidisciplinary team members, and outside health and social agencies. Ensure efficient discharge plans and accurate histories are obtained at admission. Ensure the completion of all required documentation relevant to patients in a timely, efficient manner. This includes but is not limited to:
    • Admission paperwork
    • Assessments (mental and physical)
    • Progress notes
    • Interventions
    • Evaluations
    • Discharge paperwork
    • CQI+ data
  • Assure quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards, measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and regulatory standards
  • Maintain continuity by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs
  • Protect patients and employees by adhering to safety standards; infection-control policies and protocols; medication administration and storage procedures; and controlled substance regulations
  • Use hygienic practices and teach patient hygienic practices
  • Complete all required staff competencies per program regulations in a timely manner
  • Renew licenses and certifications in a timely manner
  • Participate in individual, group, and family psychotherapy and educational seminars as appropriate
  • Insure operations of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; calling for repairs; and evaluating new equipment and techniques
  • Provide feedback to supervisor on ongoing basis in regards to concerns, improvements, changes, etc.
  • Operate and participate in tele psych as needed
  • Audit charts
  • Orient or mentor new clinical staff as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education, Certification/Licensure, and/or Experience

  1. Post Graduate Degree
  2. License / Certification
    1. Licensed Social Worker
  3. CPR certification
  4. American Heart Association issued BLS and ACLS
  5. Minimum five years' experience preferred with appropriate education
