Job Summary

Under general supervision of the College Budget Director (BD), provides high-level analytical and problem-solving support to the Executive Assistant Dean-Administration (EAD-A) and BD in relation to ongoing and one-time budget allocations and fiscal matters of significant complexity. Responsible for research project management, procedure development, and complex budget/financial management and federally mandated reporting for approximately 450 research projects with more than 400 PIs from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CA&ES) and College of Biological Sciences (CBS) who are associated with the University of California's Agricultural Experiment Station. Provides high-level fiscal, analytical, administrative and policy/procedure support to the Dean, Executive Associate Dean, EAD-A, Chief Administrative Officer, BD, and Center & Institute Directors. Independently manages short- and long-term budget planning, rate generation, financial oversight, and pre- and post-award grant management for complex College-wide Centers and Institutes.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Financial and Business Management skills and experience to perform extensive in-depth budgetary, other financial and non-financial analyses.
  • Experience presenting, orally and in writing, complex administrative and technical issues and proposed solutions, including composing and editing documents and correspondence for accuracy, consistency of format, spelling and grammar, language and professional appearance and style.
  • Experience using Advanced features of MS Excel to perform detailed analyses including Pivot tables, VLOOKUPs and creating charts and graphs as well as word processing, presentation, database, email and web-based software and automated on-line financial and payroll/personnel systems.
  • Analytical skills to anticipate/identify problems, perform research to resolve such problems, develop creative solutions and present findings and/or make recommendations to leadership.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles with diverse fund restrictions, fund accounting and research-related accounting.
  • Knowledge of budgetary cycles and practices, personnel/payroll practices, business agreements, and organizational policies and procedures. Mathematical skills sufficient to accurately calculate, manipulate and adjust data related to budgetary and financial activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in a financial role within a large, complex business environmental (preferably at an institution of higher education).
  • Experience leading trainings and/or large group meetings.
  • Experience gathering, combining and analyzing data from a variety of sources; handling sensitive or confidential information or situations; and experience with UC Davis automated financial, student information, personnel and payroll systems: Aggie Enterprise, Cognos, UCPath, Student Information System Decision Support.
  • Organizational skills sufficient to successfully assess, categorize and work with large amounts of information and data.
  • Knowledge of research-related accounting, especially Federal accounting and reporting guidelines, particularly within the USDA.
  • Knowledge of higher education research and fund accounting.

Department Overview

One of three Research and Financial Analysts that provide analytical research and financial management support collegewide as well as financial support to CA&ES Dean's Office Centers and Institutes. The Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) research project activity administered through these analysts is the largest and most prestigious in the nation.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
