Job Description

Vertex is seeking a talented Research Scientist to join a collaborative research team focused on non-viral delivery within Vertex Cell and Genetic Therapies (CGT) in Boston, MA. The group's mission is to deliver the next generation genetic therapies impacting several therapeutic areas. We are looking for a candidate with a strong desire to deliver innovative new medicines to patients in need. In this lab-based role, the ideal candidate is strongly experienced in biologics engineering, bioconjugation of antibodies and antibody-like scaffolds, biologics purification and characterization, and structure/function relationships. Prior experience in lipid nanoparticle formulation and biologics discovery are strongly preferred. The candidate should be independent, accustomed to taking initiative, and bring enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity to Vertex's fast-paced research environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively amongst several project teams to deliver complex bioconjugates using a variety of conjugation chemistries to a wide set of novel biologic formats
  • Develop, execute and optimize small- and large-scale conjugation and purification processes to enable key program milestones
  • Develop, execute, and interpret assays to establish protein and bioconjugate physiochemical properties
  • Design, engineer, characterize fit-for-purpose antibody and antibody-like scaffolds
  • Structure/function relationships of biologic/target interactions to improve desired characteristics
  • Active participation in group and cross-disciplinary project team meetings

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience working within integrated drug discovery teams
  • Hands-on experience in protein purification (affinity, SEC, ion exchange, TFF) is required
  • Experience in bio-layer interferometry, SPR, DLS, and HPLC-based characterization methods
  • Experience with liposomes, lipid nanoparticles, or other delivery vehicles
  • Track record of productivity as evidenced by a strong publication record
  • Self-motivation, organization, and ability to communicate effectively

Candidate Requirements:

  • Ph.D. with 0-3 years of relevant protein biochemistry experience. Strong candidates with a BS or MS with extensive relevant experience will also be considered.

Pay Range:

$104,200 - $156,300

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
