Position Summary

The Director of Sustainability will play a pivotal role in leading the next phase of growth and transformation for NV5's Sustainability Consulting group. As the industry accelerates toward decarbonization, ESG performance, and occupant wellness, this leadership role is both strategic and hands-on. The Director will shape the future of our consulting services-expanding offerings, growing our national team, and elevating NV5's position as an industry thought leader.

This individual will not only oversee technical delivery across LEED, WELL, and performance consulting engagements but will also drive business development, champion innovation, and ensure operational excellence. The role is ideal for a visionary leader who thrives at the intersection of technical rigor, design collaboration, and market strategy.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Growth

    Drive the strategic direction and growth of NV5's Sustainability Consulting services, identifying emerging market trends and evolving client needs.
  • Lead the transformation of the group's vision beyond certifications, emphasizing climate resilience, decarbonization, health & wellness, and ESG performance.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to set growth targets, shape team structure, define hiring priorities, and advance service innovation.
  • Represent NV5 as a thought leader through strategic partnerships, industry engagement, and high-profile speaking opportunities.
  • Oversee the financial health of the Sustainability Consulting team with full ownership of budgeting, forecasting, and P&L performance.

Project & Client Leadership

  • Serve as Principal-in-Charge or Technical Lead on flagship sustainability projects across commercial, institutional, and healthcare sectors.
  • Facilitate sustainability integration through visioning sessions, energy charrettes, and cross-disciplinary collaboration during design and construction.
  • Cultivate long-term client partnerships by delivering strategic consulting and clear pathways to certification and performance outcomes.

Team Development

  • Lead and mentor a high-performing team of sustainability professionals, including LEED and WELL APs, energy analysts, and materials experts.
  • Promote a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and excellence in project delivery.

Business Development

  • Drive business growth through proposal development, client presentations, and participation in industry forums such as USGBC, AIA, and BOMA.
  • Identify and pursue new opportunities to expand NV5's Sustainability Consulting offerings.


Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in green building, sustainability consulting, or high-performance design.
  • Extensive experience with LEED (NC, CS, EBOM), WELL, and Fitwel project certification.
  • Advanced knowledge of energy efficiency, IAQ, material transparency, water conservation, and lifecycle carbon strategies.
  • Experience facilitating charrettes and integrative design processes.
  • Proficient in LEED Online, WELL Online, Energy Star Portfolio Manager, Arc, and WBLCA platforms (e.g., Tally, One Click LCA).
  • LEED AP (BD+C or O+M) and WELL AP required; Fitwel Ambassador, GGP, or Envision SP a plus.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with ESG frameworks (e.g., GRESB, TCFD, CDP).
  • Knowledge of decarbonization planning, building electrification, and grid-interactive strategies.
  • Strong leadership, presentation, and writing skills with the ability to translate technical content into client value.
