What you'll be doing
We're looking to change the world by building software with a soul, and we want your help. The Senior Database Developer leads the design, development, and optimization of complex database systems that support mission-critical applications. This role requires deep expertise in relational database technologies, data modeling, and data integration to ensure high-quality, reliable, and secure data systems. The Senior Database Developer brings a strong understanding of database architecture, performance tuning, and data governance practices. They collaborate with cross-functional teams, including DevOps and software developers, to implement scalable and maintainable data solutions that align with customer requirements and federal compliance standards. This position is responsible for the integrity, performance, and security of databases, as well as guiding best practices for data management across projects. Responsibilities and Contributions
Organizational and Leadership Role
- Synthesizes business requirements and objectives and drives the development of solutions.
- Collaborates with talented designers, product managers, and fellow engineers to plan and build new features.
- Coaches and mentors others to develop their professional skills.
- Drives all phases of the development lifecycle from task creation to production deployment of new code.
Functional Role
- Designs, develops, and maintains secure, efficient, and scalable database solutions that meet the data and performance requirements of the project.
- Translates business and analytical needs into robust database structures and data flows.
- Establishes and maintains best practices for database design, development, and documentation to ensure maintainability and data integrity.
- Troubleshoots and resolves complex database performance issues, query optimization, and data access problems.
- Leads continuous improvement efforts for data architecture, ETL processes, and database infrastructure.
- Identifies and recommends improvements to data strategies and data governance practices across teams and projects.
- Reviews database code, including stored procedures and ETL logic, providing detailed and constructive feedback to ensure quality and performance.
- Demonstrates deep knowledge of data workflows, compliance requirements, and operational needs within the agencies and organizations supported.
Essential Skills, Experience, or Competencies
Must-Have Skills
- Experience: 15 years or more of federal onsite experience supporting and understanding agency policies and workflows.
- Demonstrated expertise with database management systems, including SQL Server, Oracle, or PostgreSQL.
- Extensive experience designing, implementing, and maintaining relational databases, data warehouses, and ETL processes.
- Proficiency in Data Analysis, Data Modeling, and Data Integration, including familiarity with tools like ERwin or similar data modeling software.
- Experience with Data Governance frameworks and practices to ensure data quality and compliance.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience developing stored procedures, functions, and triggers to support application development.
- Familiarity with cloud-based database platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related technical discipline is required. Master's degree preferred
- Strong knowledge of federal security standards (e.g., FISMA, FedRAMP) as applicable to database design and implementation.
- General work experience may be substituted for education. The requirement for education levels can be substituted at the rate of 2 years of experience for every year of education. An associate's degree is 2 years of education, a Bachelor's degree is 4 years of education, and a Master degree is 6 years of education.
- The years of specific experience used for satisfying an education requirement cannot also be used as filling the work experience requirement. Highly Desired Skills and Experience
