POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Director of Specialty Pharmacy, and according to department policies and procedures, and guidelines, is responsible for the compounding and dispensing of prescribed pharmaceuticals. The Specialty Pharmacy Service Line Manger will have supervisory responsibility for all aspects of the outpatient/retail pharmacy including; management of staff, dispensing medications, ensuring compliance of laws and regulations, and maintaining quality improvement initiatives that are consistent with Boston Medical Center's standards.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:


  • Works collaboratively on quality improvement activities and initiatives, including those that support requirements to meet NCQA standards and other state and federal regulations and other third-party contracts.

  • Collaborates with Boston Medical Center providers and care management teams to provide pharmacy support in identifying, resolving and preventing medication related problems. May include direct outreach and performing one-on-one consultations with high risk members and providers.

  • Prepare or supervise the preparation of medication.

  • Perform all aspects of filling a prescription including: verify all patient information before filling a prescription, provide consultation to customers upon filling a prescription, record prescriptions dispensed; including poisons, narcotics and other restricted drugs, perform order entry of prescriptions into the pharmacy management systems (QS1, etc.) and performs quality checks on prescriptions for correct dosage, drug interactions, etc.

  • Perform utilization reviews including medication assessments to address indications, effectiveness, safety and adherence to specialty pharmacy services.

  • Supervise specialty pharmacy staff including staff pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

  • Responsible for interviewing, conducting orientation, training, disciplining, preparing performance evaluations; etc. for specialty pharmacy staff.

  • Create staffing schedules and ensure that appropriate staffing ratios are maintained at all times.

  • Contact physicians and benefits providers as necessary to process a prescription. Work with the Utilization management pharmacist to support and clinical pharmacy programs as required by third-party payor contracts, including medication assessments, utilization management, and cost-benefit information.

  • Provide a professional and confidential environment for customers and employees at all times. Identify cost savings and improvement opportunities, implement improvements.

  • Provides drug education and counseling to patients and providers as outlined in department policies and procedures.

  • In all activities, complies with accreditation, legal, regulatory, and safety requirements (billing, dispensing and training).

  • Provides in-service education to pharmacy staff, students, nurses, physicians and other healthcare practitioners, as needed.

  • Conforms to hospital standards of performance so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided.

  • Attends and participates in department staff development conferences or other activities related to staff development.

  • Maintains own professional and specialized competency through continued education: attendance of at least one regional or national meeting per year.

  • Utilizes hospital's values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the hospital mission.

  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Work requires a Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy. Advanced degree (e.g. PharmD, M.S. or MBA) preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Work requires licensure to practice pharmacy in the State of Massachusetts.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Requires a minimum of three years related experience. QS1 experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:


  • Work requires a comprehensive understanding of the procedures, systems, and equipment used by pharmacists and technicians in the pharmacy as well as a high level of proficiency in performing pharmacist's duties and responsibilities.

  • Work requires a high level of analytical ability, organizational, personnel management skill, and focus to function as a role model to ensure the concerted approach to operations.

  • Must also be able to evaluate current pharmacy services and procedures to improve them through an evaluative process.

  • Effectively communicate and display leadership within and outside of the department.

  • Practice experience working with as well as revising and/or implementing information systems.

  • Excellent interpersonal and telephone communication skills.

  • Professional in conduct and appearance.

  • Proficient with standard software used in healthcare office setting (i.e. MS Word, Excel, web browser, etc.).
