Position Overview

Position Summary:
The Department of Communication at Eastern New Mexico University invites applications for a tenure-track position, Assistant Professor of Communication in Media Studies to begin in August 2025. Responsibilities will include teaching a variety of introductory and skill-oriented courses in traditional and online journalism, intro to media writing, multi-platform storytelling, editorial writing, feature writing, editorial design (print and digital), and other courses in the major at the undergraduate and graduate levels as needed, which may include public relations and communication general education courses. The person in this position will serve as advisor to the HoundBytes online magazine. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching. This is a residential appointment and campus presence is expected.


Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach a 12-credit hour load each semester; first-year faculty teach a 9-credit hour load
  • Continued scholarly publications, presentations, and professional development
  • This is a residential position with campus presence expected, including face-to-face teaching on campus, lecture-capture, and web platforms.
  • Academic advising for undergraduate and graduate students
  • Serve on department, college, and university committees
  • Commitment to advancing the goals and mission of the department, including departmental assessment, strategic plans, curriculum development, student recruitment, and student retention
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the department chair or dean

Courses are assigned by the chair and may include COMM 303 Public Relations Techniques, COMM 312 Copy Editing, COMM 314 Strategic Uses of Social Media, COMM 401/593 Editorial Writing, COMM 545 Communication Theory, and COMM 557 Social Media and Society, or similar courses.

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in Mass Media, Communication, or a closely related field by the time of the appointment; ABD may be considered, depending on defense date
Preferred Qualifications:
  • University-level teaching experience
  • Record of scholarly activity and/or creative publication in mass media, mass communication, and or related defined research agenda
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Research and teaching experience in print and digital media
  • Experience in teaching both online and face-to-face courses
  • Experience working with students, student media, and student organizations
  • Experience teaching writing-based courses

Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

  • Work is sedentary in nature that at times requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a consistent amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
