POSITION SPECIFICS

The Eberly College of Science is seeking an Academic Advisor - Advanced or Senior Professional to be part of an advising team focused on students interested in a health professional school for medical, dental, podiatry, optometry, and physician assistant in any major and students pursuing the majors of Premedicine and Integrative Science in the Eberly College of Science. Duties will include providing academic advising to assigned students including premed/integrative science students as well as students outside the majors interested in a health professional school, assisting students in navigating University policies and procedures and program curriculum, assisting students in preparing their candidacy for health professional school admissions and coordinating special events and programs which directly assist undergraduate students.

The selected candidate will also be responsible for the following:

  • Deliver (advanced professional) and Develop (senior professional) ancillary workshops for students on specific aspects of the Prehealth application process, including the comprehensive interview process, gap year planning, and personal statement writing (depending on level)
  • Teach first-year seminar for students interested in the Premedicine and/or Integrative Science majors
  • Assist with (advanced professional) or Teach (senior professional) a section of a one credit Medical Professions class (depending on level)
  • Serve on pre-professional evaluation committee to interview and evaluate health professions applicants
  • Coach and provide extensive feedback to medical, dental, optometry and other health profession school applicants
  • Assist in updating and maintaining the Prehealth Sharepoint site
  • Assist in planning and executing Prehealth events
  • Assist with New Student Orientation, including meet with parents, advise students, and make presentations.

A background in science is preferred. The successful candidate will have a strong background in academic advising with a proven track record and commitment to serving diverse student populations. Other required skills include attention to detail, excellent verbal and written communication, and proficiency using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Canva are desirable. Applicants with experience interviewing students for post undergraduate programs preferred.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Directors of the Premedicine and Integrative Science majors, the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Students, and the Director of the Science Advising Center to support the mission of health professions advising. We are seeking an individual who is committed to working with the advising team to provide high quality service to students and who will work to enhance the climate for the diverse student population in the College.

This position offers a flexible work arrangement that combines remote and on-campus work. Occasional evening and weekend hours required for special event staffing. Questions related to flexible work should be directed to the hiring manager during the interview process.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

If filled as Academic Adviser - Senior Professional, this position requires: Master's Degree 6+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None If filled as Academic Adviser - Advanced Professional, this position requires: Master's Degree 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

The Advanced Professional position requires a Master's degree or higher plus three or more years of related experience. The Senior Professional position requires a Master's degree or higher plus 6 or more years of related experience. Experience with Prehealth advising preferred but not required, depending on level.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. Penn State does not sponsor or take over sponsorship of a staff employment Visa. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $46,400.00 - $81,500.00.
