Position Summary This full-time Intermediate System Analyst Programmer role blends Linux system administration and web application development responsibilities, supporting both LDEO and CIESIN. The candidate will administer and enhance Linux-based research computing infrastructure while also participating in the development of cloud-based web applications and geospatial tools. This position plays a key role in delivering integrated solutions for Earth science research and applications, contributing to both systems reliability and scientific usability. Responsibilities
- System Deployment, Administration & Maintenance:
- Deploy and manage Linux-based systems in both cloud and on-premise environments.
- Maintain server hardware, storage, and network equipment in alignment with institutional policies.
- Operational & User Support:
- Provide daily operational support, resolve server and application issues, conduct system upgrades, audits, and maintain best practices for troubleshooting and documentation.
- Monitoring, Testing & Documentation:
- Monitor system performance, respond to alerts, test and document new software versions, and implement automated reporting and monitoring tools.
- Web & Application Development:
- Design and maintain web and mapping applications using JavaScript (React, Angular, Dojo), HTML, CSS, and backend APIs.
- Contribute to AWS-based systems using Agile and Git.
- Collaboration & Standards:
- Work with interdisciplinary teams to support research needs and integrate geospatial standards (Leaflet, OpenLayers, OGC protocols) into development processes.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
- At least 3 years of relevant experience in Linux system administration and/or JavaScript web development.
- Cloud environments, especially AWS.
- Scripting, virtualization (e.g., VMware), and networking.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities across different organizational units.
Preferred Qualifications
- Data lifecycle management and backup systems.
- Geospatial tools (Leaflet, OpenLayers, ArcGIS JavaScript API).
- Java, Python, or C/C++ programming.
- ArcGIS Enterprise and OGC standards (WMS, WFS, WCS, WPS).
- Monitoring tools like Nagios.
