As the leading AI development platform, our API is used by millions of developers and the majority of enterprises around the world, and powers the majority of AI applications that you may use on a daily basis.

API launches innovative features by leveraging research technology like:

• Reinforcement fine-tuning

• Tool calling during the chain-of-thought

• Image Generation

• Realtime voice-to-voice

The API TLM role ensures OpenAI's API customers have access to the world's best-performing and most capable AI models by leading the development of innovative training and deployment techniques, mentoring a high-performing ML engineering team, and translating cutting-edge research into powerful, practical AI solutions. You will manage Machine Learning Engineers that drive specific customer outcomes by developing robust, scalable implementations of cutting-edge models, closely collaborating with research teams, and writing production-ready code to integrate the models into reliable and performant APIs.

In this role, you will:

• Architect and build next-generation system protections, directly contributing through hands-on design, model training, and deployment strategies.

• Lead and manage a small, senior team of Machine Learning Engineers, empowering them with clear direction and autonomy. Support your team's professional growth and maintain high performance through mentorship and clear career progression.

• Collaborate closely with Research, Safety, Product, and Policy teams to leverage existing tools and drive cutting-edge advancements.

• Establish robust evaluation frameworks and metrics, clearly measuring progress and identifying areas for improvement.

• Proactively improve developer productivity by resolving technical challenges and providing strategic leadership.

You might thrive in this role if you:

• Bring extensive hands-on experience managing machine learning teams building developer-facing platforms, APIs, or tools that support real-world AI product deployment at scale.

• Have successfully trained, fine-tuned, or distilled LLMs and traditional ML models to solve real-world business problems.

• Enjoy being deeply involved technically-actively designing solutions, training models, and guiding deployment processes alongside your team.

• Excel at collaborating across teams to integrate existing tools and thoughtfully architect new solutions.

• Possess strong emotional intelligence, empathy, and the ability to effectively connect with colleagues.

• Embrace ambiguity and rapidly changing circumstances as opportunities to create clarity, structure, and impactful solutions.
