General Summary:

Vertex is an established, innovative biotech focused on developing lifesaving treatments for patients around the world. Our Data and Knowledge Management team is operating at the intersection of science, data, and technology to create transformative medicines for people with serious diseases.

Software engineers in our Data and Knowledge Management team focus on building complex full stack web applications, API's and microservices that support research, clinical and business operations at Vertex. We are passionate about delivering elastic, scalable, and highly available serverless solutions utilizing the latest cloud technologies. We are responsible for maintaining and developing a robust API environment, design system and serve a leadership role in defining modern software development standards. We write our own Python, Typescript and JavaScript, maintain our CI/CD pipelines leveraging SAM, CloudFormation, Git and much more! Additionally, we work with our diverse partners in an agile environment.

How you will make a difference

Design, build and maintain cloud hosted REST APIs, serverless applications and microservices. The code you write will empower scientists working on innovative treatments in genomics, biology, and chemistry. You will work with your team to "fail fast" and continuously release improvements safely and efficiently.

Mentor the engineering team at large related to best practices, code standardization and reuse. Additionally, you will participate in code reviews providing feedback to your colleagues.

Engage with senior business leaders to develop innovative software solutions that drive research at Vertex.

Contribute to long term strategic vision of the Software Engineering team.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, build and maintain cloud hosted REST APIs, serverless applications and microservices supporting our research and lab initiatives.
  • Writing code for scientists working on innovative treatments in genomics, biology, and chemistry.
  • Mentor the engineering team at large related to best practices, code standardization and reuse.
  • Participate in code reviews providing feedback to your colleagues.
  • Engage with senior business leaders in Scientific Technology to develop innovative software solutions that drive research at Vertex.
  • Contribute to long term strategic vision of the Software Engineering team.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience with custom pharmaceutical applications, ideally supporting the chemistry space
  • Substantial experience with building REST APIs (API Design Patterns, RESTful API design)
  • Strong knowledge of Python, Flask, or equivalent framework
  • Experience with AWS or related cloud technology (Lambda, EC2, API Gateway)
  • Experience working with Docker, ECS, Fargate or other container services
  • Strong knowledge of relational and/or NoSQL databases
  • Strong knowledge of modern CI/CD processes and pipelines
  • Highly collaborative and an excellent communicator

  • Experience with writing infrastructure as code using CloudFormation, Terraform or related technologies a plus
  • Experience with API management systems (MuleSoft, Apigee etc.) a plus
  • Experience with database query optimization and performance tuning a plus
  • Strong knowledge of JavaScript, TypeScript and Angular a plus

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
  • Typically requires 6 years in software engineering roles, handling complex engineering challenges.
  • Biology or Chemistry degree and experience with the drug discovery process a plus

Pay Range:

$144,000 - $216,000

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.

Flex Designation:

Hybrid-Eligible Or On-Site Eligible

In this Hybrid-Eligible role, you can choose to be designated as:
1. Hybrid: work remotely up to two days per week; or select
2. On-Site: work five days per week on-site with ad hoc flexibility.
